Worldpanel finds balanced TV and digital mix lifts FMCG brand reach

Single-source panel links ad exposure with purchases, showing TV still drives most household reach

MUMBAI: The numbers are finally getting a seat at the media-planning table. Worldpanel by Numerator has unveiled findings from a new single-source media panel that links advertising exposure directly with FMCG purchase behaviour at household level, offering marketers a closer view of how media choices translate into brand penetration.

Built with technology partner Sync Media, the panel combines media exposure and purchase behaviour from the same households. The approach is intended to address a long-standing gap in Indian media measurement, where exposure is typically planned across TV and digital while purchase impact is estimated separately through surveys and statistical modelling.

The findings suggest that TV remains the dominant reach driver, with digital adding relatively little incremental reach on its own. Across the categories studied, digital-only exposure ranged from less than 1 per cent to around 4 per cent of households.

That does not mean digital is sitting on the sidelines. Combining TV and digital lifted brand penetration compared with TV alone for nearly 75 per cent of brands studied.

The bigger takeaway, however, appears to be about balance rather than simply adding more channels. Among households exposed to both media, a more evenly distributed TV and digital mix delivered stronger impact for 80 per cent of brands, compared with households heavily skewed towards one channel.

The panel’s live brand evaluations across soap, dishwash and detergent reinforced the pattern. Digital-only exposure accounted for just 0.6 per cent to 4.1 per cent of households, while the bulk of reach came through TV either alone or alongside digital.

The data also points to category-specific differences in how much advertising exposure is needed to build penetration. Personal care brands such as soap and shampoo reached high penetration levels faster and at lower exposure frequencies than home care brands such as dishwash and detergent, which required considerably higher frequency.

In one comparison, a shampoo brand reached approximately 90 per cent penetration at roughly half the exposure frequency required by a comparable soap brand.

The findings also put the spotlight on creative and placement. On YouTube, Non-Skip ad formats outperformed Bumper ads on penetration for 75 per cent of brands studied.

Prime-time exposure and longer creative were also associated with stronger results. One shampoo brand recorded a higher penetration index when households were predominantly exposed to 30-second creatives rather than 20-second formats, and during prime time rather than non-prime time.

Manoj Menon, Director – Commercial, South Asia, Worldpanel by Numerator, said the panel is designed to show which combinations of TV and digital actually influence brand outcomes rather than relying solely on estimated effects.

The findings therefore offer a less-is-more lesson for marketers: more screens do not automatically mean more impact. The mix, frequency, format and timing can matter just as much as the reach itself.
