MUMBAI: With football rights in hand and expansion plans on the pitch, Zee is now looking to strengthen its financial playbook. Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has approved a proposal to raise a minimum of Rs 2,300 crore, signalling the broadcaster’s intent to build a stronger war chest as it pursues new growth opportunities across content, sports and digital platforms.

In a regulatory filing on Wednesday, the company said its board had approved the capital-raising plan, which could be executed in one or more phases or tranches to support strategic and business initiatives.

However, the final route remains open. The board said it would continue deliberating on the various fundraising options before deciding on the structure of the capital raise.

“The Board of Directors has approved the raising of capital by the Company of minimum Rs 2,300 crore in one or more phases/tranches to fund the strategic and business initiatives. Further, the Board decided to deliberate further on options for raising funds,” the company said in its filing.

The move comes at a significant moment for Zee, which has been actively reshaping its sports ambitions.

Just days ago, the broadcaster announced a long-term partnership with FIFA, securing exclusive rights to broadcast 39 major international football events in India between 2026 and 2034. The landmark agreement includes some of the biggest properties in global sport, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 and FIFA World Cup 2030.

Beyond the flagship tournaments, the partnership covers a broad portfolio of competitions, including men’s and women’s youth World Cups, FIFA Futsal World Cups and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

The timing of the fundraising plan is likely to attract attention as Zee ramps up investments to support its sports strategy and broaden audience engagement.

To bolster its sports offering, the company recently unveiled four dedicated sports channels Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD designed to cater to the growing appetite for international sporting content.

The broadcaster has also confirmed that FIFA events will be streamed on Zee5, with multilingual coverage aimed at expanding football’s reach across diverse Indian audiences.

The first major test of that strategy will arrive soon. The FIFA World Cup 2026 is scheduled to kick off on June 11, 2026, giving Zee a global sporting spectacle around which to build its sports ecosystem.

While the company has not disclosed how the proposed funds will be allocated, the capital raise is expected to provide additional flexibility as it invests in content acquisition, platform expansion and long-term business initiatives.

For Zee, the latest decision suggests that the next phase of growth may require more than programming power alone. As competition intensifies across television, streaming and sports broadcasting, financial muscle could prove just as important as media rights.
