MUMBAI: India’s festive retail arena has turned into a high-voltage sales bonanza. E-commerce giant Flipkart has wrapped up its 13th edition of The Big Billion Days, clocking an eye-watering 20 to 22 per cent year-on-year surge in orders, units sold, and transacting buyers during its 11-day shopping marathon.

The annual extravaganza proved to be an irresistible pull for the nation’s digital consumers. Nearly nine out of ten online shoppers in India logged onto Flipkart over the event, pushing unique visitors up by almost 10 per cent compared to last year. The madness kicked off at midnight on October 9, when one in every 15 Indian online shoppers flooded the platform in the very first hour alone. Demand for big-ticket items soared to nearly nine times the normal daily average throughout the sale period, led by an opening-hour rush that saw large appliances jump 30 per cent year-on-year.

Demographics and quick-commerce trends told an equally compelling story. Gen Z shoppers made up nearly half of the customer base, while Tier 2-plus cities accounted for roughly 60 per cent of buyers. Beauty, grooming, and general merchandise recorded a massive 40 per cent jump in buyers, while lifestyle categories rose 12.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the quick-commerce division Flipkart Minutes saw new customers jump 1.7 times compared to regular days, with fast-growing hubs like Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, Jabalpur, and Meerut stocking up on everything from everyday essentials to laptops, gaming tablets, and air fryers.

Sellers across the country cashed in heavily on the festive frenzy. About 31 per cent of participating sellers doubled their usual daily business volume during the event. Merchants hailing from Tier 2-plus locations grew 2.15 times, with manufacturing hubs such as Bhiwadi, Panipat, Tirupur, and Hisar seeing sales explode by up to 2.6 times their standard output.

Not to be outdone, chief rival Amazon India is serving up its own massive festive numbers through the Amazon Great Indian Festival. In its opening week, overall seller sales on Amazon skyrocketed 3.5 times compared to business as usual, while total units sold more than doubled. Driven by a 30 per cent year-on-year surge in seller participation, over 70 per cent of whom hail from Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, small and medium businesses crossing the Rs 10 lakh sales threshold quadrupled. With zero referral fees on items under Rs 1,000 grease-lining the wheels, artisans and entrepreneurs from Churu to Saharanpur are proving that India’s festive appetite is bigger and punchier than ever.
