MUMBAI: The toughest decision this weekend may not be what to watch, but what to skip. From Gotham’s shadowy streets to the battlefields of the Mahabharata, and from gaming arenas to relationship dramas, streaming platforms have packed the first weekend of August with enough fresh releases to keep remote controls working overtime.

Leading the line-up is Prime Video, which returns to Gotham with Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2, where Bruce Wayne once again takes on corruption and organised crime while confronting new enemies and deeper personal conflicts. The platform also rolls out Playground Season 5, bringing back India’s gaming reality competition with new teams, celebrity mentors and fresh challenges, before closing the weekend with Special Ops: Lioness Season 3 on August 2. Starring Zoe Saldana, the espionage drama dives back into covert intelligence missions, political conspiracies and high-stakes global operations.

ZEE5 counters with a trio of releases spanning romance and regional cinema. Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan, stars Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde and Manish Paul in a romantic comedy that explores love, loyalty and second chances after an unexpected twist in a marriage. The platform also premieres Malayalam drama Balan – The Boy, which explores identity, family and emotional resilience, alongside Tamil film Nooru Saami, inspired by real-life events and centred on the enduring bond between a mother and her son.

For mythology enthusiasts, SonyLIV brings The Legend of Karna, an animated retelling of one of the Mahabharata’s most compelling characters. The series traces Karna’s journey from abandonment to becoming one of India’s greatest warriors, exploring the loyalty, sacrifice and moral dilemmas that defined his life.

Meanwhile, JioHotstar turns the spotlight on regional entertainment with Bhojpuri Bawaal, a reality series offering behind-the-scenes access to some of the Bhojpuri film industry’s biggest personalities, blending celebrity stories with unscripted moments from their personal and professional lives.

With releases spread between July 31 and August 2, the weekend slate offers something for nearly every mood, whether it’s superheroes, mythology, romance, reality television or high-octane espionage. For streaming fans, the only cliffhanger may be deciding where to press play first.
