MUMBAI: The whistle has not blown yet, but Zee’s sports ambitions are already in full play. Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL) has officially launched its Unite8 Sports network after securing the required approvals from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB), setting the stage for its broadcast of the FIFA World Cup 2026 later this month.

The newly operational network comprises four channels Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD and is now available across more than 500 cable and distribution platforms nationwide.

The rollout includes major direct-to-home and cable operators such as Dish TV, Tata Play, Airtel, Sun Direct, Siti Networks, Hinduja Global, Fastway, Andhra Pradesh State FiberNet Ltd., Kerala Communicators Cable Ltd., Thamizhaga Cable TV Communications and several regional distribution networks.

With the launch, ZEEL is formally re-entering India’s sports broadcasting market, offering a portfolio spanning football, cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling, boxing and combat sports. The network’s biggest draw, however, will be its exclusive broadcast of the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicks off on 11 June across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The channel launch comes days after ZEEL secured rights to broadcast multiple FIFA properties in India, including the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups, the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and several age-group and futsal tournaments through 2034.

Speaking on the new sports channels, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. chief business officer for Unite8 Sports Bavesh Janavlekar said, “With Unite8 Sports, we have  built a curated, multi-sport o;ering that reflects the evolving preferences of Indian  audiences, and creates a scalable platform that can match the increasing demand for  high-quality, accessible live sports action across the country. Our focus is on ensuring seamless access for viewers, supported by strong partnerships across the distribution  ecosystem. We are geared up to present the upcoming FIFA events across our channels,  and we remain well-positioned to deliver a compelling viewing experience to fans across  the Nation.”

The move marks a significant expansion of the company’s sports strategy as it looks to build a broader audience base beyond entertainment programming. Unlike the premium subscription-heavy approach adopted by some rivals, Unite8 Sports is positioning itself as a multi-sport destination with wide distribution and accessibility.

The timing is particularly important. With football’s global showpiece event just around the corner, the broadcaster now has both the content and distribution infrastructure in place to reach millions of viewers across the country.

As the countdown to FIFA World Cup 2026 enters its final stretch, ZEEL is hoping its latest play in sports broadcasting proves to be more than just a comeback story and the opening chapter of a long-term push into one of India’s fastest-evolving media segments.
