MUMBAI: The franchise is shifting lanes from the big screen to the small one. Peacock has officially ordered a TV series based on the long-running Fast & Furious film franchise, extending one of NBCUniversal’s biggest entertainment properties into scripted television.

The series order follows Vin Diesel’s announcement of the project’s development at NBCUniversal’s upfronts in May. Diesel had said four Fast & Furious shows were in the pipeline at the event, although Peacock later clarified that only one of those projects was actively being developed.

The television project now has its creative team in place. Mike Daniels, known for Sons of Anarchy and NBC’s forthcoming Rockford Files remake, and Wolfe Coleman of 9-1-1: Lone Star will write the pilot and serve as showrunners.

Daniels and Coleman will also executive produce alongside Diesel and Sam Vincent of One Race. Neal H Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan are also attached as executive producers, with Moritz and Original Film already serving as producers of the Fast & Furious film franchise.

For now, Peacock is keeping the details firmly under the bonnet. The potential title, storyline and other details of the series have not been disclosed, leaving the television expansion largely under wraps as development moves forward.

Peacock is targeting a 2028 premiere for the series, a date that would place its arrival alongside the next major chapter of the film franchise. Fast Forever, the next Fast & Furious movie, is currently scheduled to reach cinemas on 17 March 2028.

The timing creates a direct connection between the franchise’s theatrical and television ambitions. The TV series would arrive in the same year as Fast Forever, giving NBCUniversal another opportunity to keep the property in the spotlight as the film saga moves towards its next chapter.

The scale of the franchise helps explain the move to television. Fast & Furious currently spans 11 films released over 25 years and has generated more than $7 billion at the worldwide box office.

Its reach also extends well beyond cinema screens. The franchise has been used as the basis for theme park attractions, video games and merchandise, turning the series into a broader entertainment property for NBCUniversal.

The television expansion also comes as Peacock develops another high-profile scripted project. The streamer has announced The Chairman, a drama starring Eddie Murphy, marking what would be Murphy’s first ongoing series role since he left Saturday Night Live in 1984.

The Chairman comes from Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and adds another established name to Peacock’s scripted ambitions. The project and the Fast & Furious series together signal a continued push to build recognisable entertainment properties beyond individual film releases.

For Fast & Furious, however, the move represents a different kind of franchise mileage. After 11 films, more than $7 billion in global box-office revenue and 25 years of theatrical history, the property is now preparing to put its pedal to the television floor, with Peacock aiming to bring the series to audiences in 2028.
