MUMBAI: Indian football fans are getting a goalkeeper with a nickname that doubles as a warning. Oliver Kahn, the German legend once feared across Europe as Der Titan, has joined Zee5’s expert panel for FIFA World Cup 2026, lending the broadcaster’s coverage a dose of genuine World Cup pedigree.

Kahn’s credentials need no inflating. He captained Germany through 86 international caps between 1995 and 2006, dragged his side to the 2002 World Cup final virtually single-handedly, and walked away from that tournament as the only goalkeeper in the competition’s history to win the Golden Ball, an award for the best player at the entire World Cup, handed to a man whose primary job was stopping goals rather than scoring them. A glittering career with Bayern Munich and Germany later, he has spent his retirement as an executive, commentator, author and one of football’s most listened-to voices.

India is not unfamiliar territory either. Kahn first touched down in 2008 for his Bayern farewell match against Mohun Bagan in Kolkata, and returned in 2023 to talk football development with fans and students. Now he is back for the tournament itself, joining a Zee5 panel that already includes Bhaichung Bhutia, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Igor Stimac, a lineup mixing Indian football royalty with genuine global heavyweight.

Kahn called the World Cup “the ultimate stage in football”, one that turns extraordinary talent and raw emotion into moments that outlive the tournament itself, and said he was delighted to join Zee5 and Unite8 Sports to share that perspective with Indian audiences tracking the sport’s rapid rise in the country.

The signing slots into a much bigger play. Zee Entertainment’s tie-up with FIFA runs all the way through 2034, covering the 2030 World Cup, the 2027 Women’s World Cup and a clutch of other marquee tournaments, streamed across Zee5 and Unite8 Sports in English, Hindi, Bangla and Malayalam under the banner “Poora India Watchega.” Kahn’s job now is simple: make sure when India watches, it understands exactly what it is looking at. Given the man once made an entire continent flinch every time the ball came near his box, that should not be too tall an order.
