Bigg Boss Bangla returns after decade with Sourav Ganguly as host

MUMBAI: After years of batting from the commentary box, Sourav Ganguly is ready to call the shots inside a very different kind of arena. Bigg Boss Bangla is returning to television after a 10-year hiatus, with the former India captain taking charge as host when the Bengali edition premieres on August 30 on Star Jalsha and JioHotstar.

The comeback gives the long-running reality franchise a distinctly Bengal-first identity. Ganguly steps into the host’s chair for a contest where strategy, alliances and mind games replace cover drives and captaincy calls, with JioStar building the season around the proposition “Durgo Joy Shohoj Noy” — conquering the fort is never easy.

The association between Ganguly and the show was first unveiled at Eden Gardens in March, where he revealed the Bigg Boss Bangla logo during a gala cricket match attended by advertisers and public figures. JioStar positioned the launch as a meeting point between two of Bengal’s strongest cultural passions: cricket and entertainment.

Produced by EndemolShine India, the new season marks the return of the Bengali-language edition after a decade off air. Banijay said the revival expands the Bigg Boss franchise’s Indian footprint to seven languages, joining the Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Malayalam versions.

While the format remains familiar, the new season is being pitched as more than a straightforward regional adaptation. Contestants will have to navigate shifting friendships, rivalries and alliances inside the house, with the same blend of social dynamics and strategic gameplay that has made the franchise one of Indian television’s longest-running reality formats.

The launch also forms part of a wider regional push by JioStar during the 2026 festive season, with multiple language editions rolling out across markets including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Bangla.

For the Bengali edition, however, Ganguly’s presence is expected to provide the strongest local connect. Few public figures command the same familiarity in Bengal, making him a natural fit to front a franchise that is looking to reconnect with audiences after a decade-long absence.

The first promo featuring Ganguly has already begun building curiosity around his new role, presenting the season as a fresh avatar of the franchise while retaining its familiar format.

The Bigg Boss Bangla Grand Opening airs on August 30 at 8 pm, followed by regular episodes from August 31 at 9:30 pm on Star Jalsha and JioHotstar.

For a show built on unpredictability, the return comes with one certainty: after 10 years away, Bigg Boss Bangla is back with one of Bengal’s biggest names holding the remote.
