Pepe Jeans stitches Kerala’s Onam spirit into its denim playbook

A multi-city outdoor blitz, CRM push and influencer play show the British brand is finally speaking the language of regional festive commerce

KERALA: Global denim brands have historically treated India’s festive calendar as an afterthought, a Diwali discount code bolted onto an otherwise generic marketing plan. Pepe Jeans London appears to have decided that will no longer do, at least not in Kerala. The brand has launched a dedicated Onam campaign that weaves the state’s cultural character directly into its denim storytelling, and the ambition on display suggests genuine regional intent rather than a token nod.

The mechanics are worth studying. Pepe Jeans is putting up thirteen outdoor sites across eight Kerala cities, Ernakulam, Kollam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, Kannur, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam, a spread that goes well beyond the usual metro-only playbook most fashion brands default to. Layering onto that is a CRM push through WhatsApp and SMS aimed squarely at the brand’s existing Kerala customer base, a far more targeted instrument than blanket advertising, and a collaboration with two Kerala-based influencers tasked with making the campaign feel locally authentic rather than parachuted in from a global creative deck.

That three-pronged structure, outdoor for reach, CRM for retention, influencers for cultural credibility, is a genuinely well-considered response to how festive shopping actually works in a state like Kerala, where Onam carries emotional weight that a generic sale banner simply cannot capture. Jallipally, the chief executive of Pepe Jeans London India, described the campaign as an attempt to marry Onam’s spirit of togetherness with the brand’s own contemporary denim identity, and the creative direction, relaxed silhouettes and versatile shirts set against familiar Kerala backdrops, backs that ambition rather than merely gesturing at it.

The bigger story here is about relevance. International fashion brands operating in India have long struggled with the tension between global brand consistency and local cultural resonance, often erring too far toward the former and coming across as tone deaf. Pepe Jeans’ Onam push, with its regional influencer casting and localised customer communication, suggests a brand willing to invest real effort in feeling native to a market rather than merely present in it. If the approach translates into footfall during one of Kerala’s biggest shopping seasons, expect other global denim players to take note and follow suit.
