MUMBAI: Identity is increasingly going mobile, and millions of Indians appear to be carrying their Aadhaar in their pockets. The Aadhaar App has crossed 31 million downloads within just five months of launch, signalling growing adoption of the government’s digital identity platform and a rising preference for smartphone-based citizen services.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the app is rapidly becoming a go-to gateway for Aadhaar-related services, allowing users to manage identity updates and verification directly from their phones while reducing dependence on physical service centres.

The numbers point to a growing shift towards self-service digital governance. Nearly 4 million users have updated their mobile numbers through the app, while around 850,000 residents have used it to change their addresses.

Designed with a privacy-first approach, the Aadhaar App enables users to securely show, share and verify their identity through a range of digital tools. Features include biometric lock and unlock functionality, face authentication for proof of presence, authentication history tracking and QR-based contact sharing.

The platform also allows users to download e-Aadhaar, book appointments at Aadhaar Seva Kendras and access multiple identity verification services without leaving the app.

Beyond routine updates, the app is increasingly finding its way into everyday use cases. The government said Aadhaar-based QR verification is being used for hotel check-ins, hospital admissions, visitor management systems, event access and identity verification of gig workers and service providers.

Available on both Android and iOS, the Aadhaar App forms part of the government’s broader push to digitise citizen services while improving convenience, accessibility and data security.

With 31 million downloads, 4 million mobile number updates and 850,000 address changes already recorded, the platform’s early momentum suggests that Aadhaar’s next chapter may be less about carrying a card and more about carrying a smartphone.
