MUMBAI: Identity has found a new address and it fits neatly inside a smartphone. The Aadhaar app has crossed the 4 crore download mark, underscoring the rapid shift towards mobile-first identity management as more citizens use digital services to update records, verify credentials and manage their Aadhaar details without visiting enrolment centres.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said the app has evolved into a comprehensive platform for Aadhaar-related services, enabling users to access e-Aadhaar, update personal information, manage security settings and complete identity-related tasks from their mobile devices.

Since its launch, the app has processed more than 11.65 lakh address updates, allowing users to keep their Aadhaar records current without the need for physical visits. It has also facilitated nearly 49 lakh mobile number updates, helping residents maintain accurate contact information linked to their Aadhaar accounts.

The platform’s latest feature email updates has also recorded strong early adoption. Introduced on 1 July, the service has already enabled around 12.5 lakh email addresses to be added or updated through the app.

To encourage wider use, the government has waived the usual Rs 75 fee for email updates on the Aadhaar app until 31 December 2026, making the service free for users during the promotional period.

Security features have emerged as another major draw. According to government data, Aadhaar holders have used the app’s biometric lock and unlock facility more than 1.91 crore times. The feature allows users to instantly secure or unlock their biometric information whenever authentication is required, giving them greater control over the use of their identity credentials.

Officials said the milestone reflects growing public confidence in digital identity services and aligns with the government’s broader Digital India initiative, which aims to expand paperless, mobile-first public services.

As smartphones increasingly become the primary gateway to government services, the Aadhaar app is also reducing dependence on physical Aadhaar centres for routine updates and verification tasks.

With 4 crore downloads, 49 lakh mobile updates, 11.65 lakh address changes and 1.91 crore biometric transactions, the app’s growth signals how India’s digital identity ecosystem is steadily moving from counters and paperwork to taps and swipes.
