MUMBAI: Few careers read as cleanly as Vinay Subramanyam’s, and fewer still land quite this well. The marketing veteran has just joined Mondelez International as Vice President, Marketing in India, based out of Mumbai. This role puts him at the helm of brand strategy for one of the country’s biggest FMCG operators, home to Cadbury, Oreo and Bournvita.

The move caps a run through some of India’s most competitive food and beverage stables. Subramanyam spent the last three years and five months as senior director, marketing, at Kellanova, having joined in April 2023 fresh off a stint as chief marketing officer at Pidilite Industries. Before that came six years and eleven months at Britannia Industries, where he wore multiple hats, VP and chief marketing officer, general manager at Britchip Foods, the joint venture with Greece’s Chipita SA, and category manager for health and vitality. Each role added a different muscle: brand building, category management and joint venture leadership all under one roof.

The Britannia stint itself followed a earlier run at Kellogg Company, where Subramanyam handled the corn flakes and masterbrand portfolio as associate director before that, as national sales development manager, he pioneered sales automation for the company, a detail that hints at an operator as comfortable with systems as with storytelling. Add earlier years at Britannia as trade marketing manager and product manager for Tiger, plus a spell at General Mills on Dip Trix and an even earlier one at VIP Industries in sales, and the picture is of a marketer who has quite literally worked every rung of the FMCG ladder.

That breadth is precisely what makes this appointment feel less like a lateral shuffle and more like a natural culmination. Mondelez gets a leader who understands biscuits, snacks and mass-market brand building from the ground up, at a time when the category is only getting more competitive. For Subramanyam, it is the biggest stage yet, and one he appears entirely built for.
