MUMBAI: Looks like Prashant Khanna is changing the scoreboard without leaving the game. After spending nearly a decade shaping the technology and production backbone of some of India’s biggest sporting spectacles, Khanna has stepped into a broader leadership role at JioStar, with a sharper focus on rights, innovation and digital growth.

Khanna has been elevated to Head – Sports: Rights, Innovation and Cricinfo Business, expanding his responsibilities beyond production and technology to include sports rights, strategic partnerships, innovation and the Cricinfo business.

Announcing the move on LinkedIn, Khanna said the new role marks an opportunity to build on nearly nine years of experience across Star, Disney Star and JioStar, bringing together rights, partnerships, innovation and digital to support the next phase of growth for the company’s sports business.

He noted that the sports industry is evolving rapidly, creating fresh opportunities for broadcasters, rights holders and technology partners to collaborate more closely. In his new role, Khanna said he looks forward to working with internal teams, leagues, governing bodies and partners to build stronger collaborations and unlock long-term value across the sports ecosystem.

Khanna was previously Head – Sports & Live Experience Production Technology & Services, where he played a key role in developing the production and technology capabilities behind major live sporting events.

He has been with JioStar since November 2024, following the merger of Star India’s media assets with Reliance-backed Viacom18. Before joining the company, Khanna served as Production Contract Manager at the International Cricket Council (ICC), adding international sports production expertise to his career.

His elevation comes at a time when sports broadcasting is rapidly expanding beyond live coverage, with digital platforms, premium rights, fan engagement and innovation becoming central to the business. By combining sports rights, technology and the Cricinfo business under one leadership role, JioStar appears to be strengthening its strategy for a more integrated and digitally driven sports ecosystem.
