JioStar ad sales executive Zorif Charania exits after leading platform’s rise to number one

Zorif Charania’s four-year run through Voot, JioCinema and Hotstar tracks the industry’s own climb from also-ran to number one

MUMBAI: Executives rarely announce their exits with the swagger of a title sequence, but Zorif Charania’s send-off from JioStar reads like one. In a LinkedIn post that is equal parts victory lap and thank-you note, the senior executive for digital ad sales and brand partnerships in the west region signs off after four years and four months, a tenure that happened to coincide with one of Indian media’s most dramatic mergers.

Charania joined as Voot was still finding its footing, stuck at a distant number three in the streaming pecking order. He leaves having watched that business fuse with Disney+ Hotstar to form JioHotstar, now comfortably the country’s largest streaming platform following the Reliance-Disney merger completed in 2025. Few professionals get to say they were present for a transformation of that scale, fewer still get to claim they helped build it.

The substance behind the sentiment is worth noting. Charania describes moving from a “creative-media lens” to genuine command over media planning, publishing and monetisation across CTV and mobile, while handling portfolios spanning FMCG, infrastructure, and auto and OEM, some of the largest advertising categories in the country. That is a meaningful arc for anyone in digital ad sales, and it tracks neatly with how the platform itself scaled monetisation across genres and formats during the same window.

His career map is a tidy case study in the digital advertising pipeline: agency-side stints at AGENCY09, Hashtasy Digital and VMLY&R, an internship at Jio Creative Labs, and finally the client-side seat at Jio Hotstar. An MBA in communication and media studies from the Welingkar Institute of Management, layered atop an M.Com and a BMS in marketing from the University of Mumbai, rounds out a profile that is more analytically grounded than the average ad sales resume.

What stands out most, though, is the tone. There is no bitterness here, no thinly veiled dig at management, just gratitude for mentors who “backed me before I’d earned it”, agency partners, and internal teams who made “the hard days lighter and the big wins bigger.” In an industry known for its churn, that is a graceful way to walk out the door, and it leaves the door rather open for whatever comes next.
