Independence Day gives India’s consumption story a 25 per cent festive boost

Premiumisation, higher footfall and online demand give festive consumption an early boost

MUMBAI: Independence Day has given India’s consumption story a timely lift, with brands and retailers reporting up to 25 per cent growth in value sales and 5-7 per cent growth in volumes compared with last year, setting an encouraging tone for the festive season ahead, according to an Economic Times report.

The sales surge comes ahead of Onam later this month and the extended festive consumption period leading up to Diwali, India’s biggest consumption season. The stronger performance suggests consumers are opening their wallets despite higher prices across several product categories.

Volumes increased even in smartphones, laptops and televisions, where prices have risen by as much as 40 per cent over the past 10 months because of higher input costs. Several iPhone and television models were sold out on Flipkart during the sales period.

Online demand was particularly strong. Amazon India saw demand rise to more than twice normal levels across smartphones, electronics, fashion and beauty, with shoppers also showing greater appetite for premium products.

Television maker Super Plastronics sold out inventory across its licensed Kodak, Thomson and Blaupunkt television brands on both Amazon and Flipkart.

The increase in value sales was driven by a combination of higher store footfall, volume growth and premiumisation, alongside price increases in some categories. Discounts, however, softened the impact of higher prices, indicating that the improvement was not simply a billing-value effect.

Reliance Retail recorded its best Independence Day sales, with growth of more than 20 per cent across grocery, electronics, apparel and its online platform JioMart.

Department store chain Lifestyle International also recorded double-digit year-on-year sales growth, helped by stronger in-store traffic. Vijay Sales reported more than 20 per cent growth, with volumes increasing 5 per cent.

The online channel also outperformed expectations. Flipkart recorded sales ahead of estimates across mobiles, large appliances, electronics, furniture, home, lifestyle and grocery categories.

For Super Plastronics, the demand spike came as a pleasant surprise after a relatively muted year. The company grew 14 per cent year on year during the period, but limited inventory meant it could not fully capitalise on the stronger demand.

Consumer electronics provided another sign that shoppers remain willing to spend on higher-value products.

Haier India reported strong Independence Day sales across categories, led by premium products such as front-load washing machines, side-by-side refrigerators and televisions measuring 55 inches and above.

The company recorded 45-50 per cent growth in value sales and nearly 30-35 per cent growth in volumes compared with last year.

The gap between value and volume growth highlights the growing role of premiumisation. While consumers remain price-conscious, those who are spending appear increasingly willing to move towards more expensive products, particularly in electronics and appliances.

Independence Day and Republic Day have become major consumption occasions outside India’s traditional festive calendar. Retailers and marketers have promoted these periods for nearly two decades, initially as a way to clear inventory before the main festive season.

E-commerce marketplaces including Amazon and Flipkart began their Independence Day promotions in the second week of August, while offline retailers intensified their campaigns around Thursday and Friday.

This year’s performance suggests that the promotions are doing more than simply shifting stock. Higher volumes across online and offline channels, stronger footfall and demand for premium products point to an improvement in underlying consumer sentiment.

With Onam around the corner and the festive calendar building towards Diwali, the Independence Day sales surge offers an early positive signal for retailers and brands. If the momentum continues, the festive season could see consumers spend more freely, even as higher prices keep the value of every purchase firmly in focus.
