Festive shopping decisions in India can start eight weeks early
Taboola’s Realize playbook finds different decision windows across major categories
MUMBAI: The festive rush may have a date, but the decision to shop starts much earlier. Consumer consideration in India can begin up to eight weeks before the festive peak, with different categories entering the consideration journey at different points, according to Taboola’s India Festive Playbook 2026, Light the Right Moments.
The playbook, based on Taboola Readership Intelligence and behavioural insights, makes a case for looking beyond the familiar festival-day countdown. Its central finding is that festive shopping is less of a sprint to Diwali and more of a relay, with consumer momentum passing from one occasion to the next.
The festive calendar stretches from Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi through Navratri, Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali, followed by weddings, while consumer motivations move through stages such as upgrade, prepare, celebrate, express, invest and gift before beginning again.
The shift is visible in what people read. While overall readership remains relatively stable during the season, religion and spirituality readership rises three to four times on key festival days, suggesting that festivals change the nature of consumer attention rather than simply increasing traffic.
And there is no single festive shopping window. Data covering September to November 2025 shows that Technology, Automotive, Home, Finance, Fashion, Jewellery and Travel enter and exit the consideration journey at different points. The playbook notes that consumer attention does not build uniformly across categories.
That matters because many festive campaigns appear to arrive after consumers have already started thinking. The playbook says consideration builds over weeks, while typical campaigns tend to activate within a shorter mid-September to October window.
The category differences are particularly telling. Technology is classified as an early and extended window, while Fashion is more event-led and dynamic, with messaging needing to evolve around Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali. Finance has a long, high-consideration journey. Automotive is described as long and research-intensive, Real Estate as long and trust-driven, and Travel as seasonal and intent-led.
AI has shortened one part of the journey, but not all of it. According to the playbook, consumers have moved from the older search → read → compare → shortlist process towards AI → shortlist → validate → choose. Finding information may now be instant, but building confidence still involves reviews, comparisons, expert content and trusted publishers.
That validation happens across a broad mix of sources, from news and current affairs to expert opinions, brand websites, retailers and marketplaces, product ratings, and Finance, Auto, Tech, Lifestyle, Travel and Food content. The playbook’s point is simple: consumers may use AI to get to the shortlist faster, but they still move around the Open Internet to reduce uncertainty before buying.
The scale behind the platform is also substantial. Realize reports 292M-plus monthly clicks, 110M-plus daily active users and 24B-plus monthly visible impressions, while claiming reach among 86 per cent of India’s 25–64 decision-making demographic.
Its reported audience coverage spans several verticals: 97M in Arts & Entertainment, 101M in Business, 43M in Science & Technology, 124M in Fantasy & Sports, 98M in Travel, 112M in Food & Beverage, 85M in Automobiles, 59M in Real Estate, 120M in Shopping, 87M in Health & Fitness, 90M in Consumer Electronics and 77M in Ecommerce.
The publisher network covers English and Hindi, alongside Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali, giving marketers access to both national and regional audiences.
For advertisers, the playbook recommends replacing calendar-led planning with consumer-led planning: identify when consideration begins, maintain a presence as it develops, adapt creative as intent changes and optimise continuously using live signals. It also supports static, motion, video and rich-media formats, while allowing marketers to import social creatives or create variations using GenAI prompts.
Ultimately, the report’s festive lesson is less about selling harder at Diwali and more about showing up before the shopping cart does. Festive success, it argues, begins long before the sale — in the moments when consumers are still deciding what deserves a place on their list.
