MUMBAI: Looks like India’s advertisers are finally reading the fine print before hitting ‘publish’. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has recorded its highest-ever voluntary compliance rate, with 99.7 per cent of advertisers modifying or withdrawing advertisements in line with the self-regulator’s recommendations during the first quarter of FY2026-27.

The milestone marks a sharp improvement from the 86 per cent voluntary compliance recorded across FY2025-26 and 83 per cent in FY2024-25, signalling growing acceptance of self-regulation across India’s rapidly expanding advertising ecosystem.

During the quarter, ASCI processed 1,616 cases relating to 1,089 advertisements spanning multiple sectors. Of these, 179 advertisements involved influencer marketing, underlining the watchdog’s increasing focus on digital creators and social media promotions.

The achievement is particularly significant given the fragmented nature of India’s digital advertising landscape, where campaigns move quickly across platforms and enforcement has traditionally lagged behind the pace of content creation. Despite that complexity, advertisers ranging from large corporations to emerging brands and individual influencers complied with ASCI’s recommendations by promptly modifying or withdrawing advertisements.

While print and television have historically maintained high compliance levels touching 97 per cent in FY2025-26 digital advertising has remained the sector presenting the biggest regulatory challenge. The latest figures suggest that gap is narrowing, with digital compliance now approaching the standards seen in traditional media.

The numbers also reflect a broader shift in industry thinking, where consumer trust is increasingly viewed as a business asset rather than merely a regulatory obligation. As brands face greater public scrutiny, transparent and responsible advertising is becoming central to long-term credibility.

ASCI said the results reinforce the effectiveness of India’s self-regulatory framework, which seeks to balance innovation with consumer protection without relying solely on statutory enforcement.

Commenting on the development, ASCI CEO and secretary general Manisha Kapoor said the 99.7 per cent voluntary compliance rate demonstrates the industry’s growing commitment to truthful and responsible advertising. She added that the achievement reflects collaborative efforts by advertisers, agencies, influencers, platforms, regulators, the Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) and technical experts, while reaffirming ASCI’s commitment to ensuring consumer interests remain at the heart of advertising as the industry continues to evolve.
