MUMBAI: India’s micro-drama business is gearing up for a major plot twist, with advertising expected to emerge as a significant revenue stream alongside subscriptions as the format reaches a wider audience.

The market could expand nearly 10-fold from around Rs 2,300 crore in FY26 to Rs 23,500-25,500 crore by FY32, according to Redseer Strategy Consultants. The firm expects the market to reach around Rs 4,600 crore in FY27.

Subscriptions currently account for about 99 per cent of micro-drama revenue. However, their share could fall to around 95 per cent in FY27 as advertising rises to nearly 5 per cent of the market.

Advertising revenue from micro-dramas is projected to increase from around Rs 24 crore in FY26 to Rs 210 crore in FY27 and eventually reach Rs 5,000-5,500 crore by FY32.

The shift towards advertising could substantially widen the audience for the format. Redseer estimates that daily active users on advertising-supported micro-drama platforms could reach 140-150 million by FY32, nearly eight times the projected base today.

The existing audience remains largely concentrated among paying users. Around 15-17 million users paid for micro-dramas each month in FY26, while about 40 million users paid for the format at least once during the year.

With India’s broader addressable pool for paid digital content estimated at 250-280 million users, platforms have considerable room to convert non-paying viewers into micro-drama consumers.

Consumer interest could also support the transition. More than 65 per cent of surveyed consumers expressed interest in an ad-supported micro-drama experience, indicating that free access could lower the entry barrier for audiences that are unwilling to pay upfront.

The format itself lends well to advertising. Micro-dramas are consumed through short, frequent and often unplanned viewing sessions, while serialised stories and cliffhangers encourage viewers to return for the next episode. As audiences and viewing frequency increase, platforms can build larger pools of advertising inventory.

Advertising could be introduced at several points in the viewing journey, including rewarded ads and ad-supported content unlocks. At the same time, premium subscriptions could continue to target viewers willing to pay for uninterrupted viewing.

This could lead to a more segmented business model, with advertising used to maximise reach and subscriptions or episodic payments focused on viewers with higher willingness to pay.

Content supply will be another key factor as the market expands. The short format, faster production cycles and ability to produce stories in multiple vernacular languages could allow platforms to refresh their libraries more frequently and reach audiences beyond early adopters.

Generative AI could further reduce production costs by supporting areas such as scripting, localisation, post-production, recommendations and marketing. More efficient production could help platforms build larger libraries and release content more frequently, both of which would be important for sustaining an ad-supported audience.

The move towards advertising will also require investment in ad infrastructure, measurement and programmatic capabilities. Studios will need to create content that works for both paying and ad-supported audiences, while advertisers will have to develop creative suited to short, narrative-led viewing.

For the micro-drama industry, the next phase is therefore less about proving that audiences will pay and more about finding ways to monetise the much larger audience that has yet to enter the paid ecosystem.
