Weekend OTT watchlist brings 10 new titles across major platforms
From Kargil drama and Ted Lasso to K-dramas and crime thrillers, here’s what to watch
MUMBAI: This weekend, the couch is calling and the OTT platforms are answering with quite a lineup. From war rooms and football grounds to family secrets, serial killers and second chances, the latest releases bring enough twists and turns to make choosing what to watch harder than actually watching it.
Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, ZEE5 and Apple TV+ have rolled out a mix of Indian originals, returning favourites and international titles, giving viewers everything from military drama and romance to action, animation and crime.
Here are 10 titles to add to the weekend watchlist.
- Operation Safed Sagar: The Highest Air Force Mission — Netflix
Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar: The Highest Air Force Mission revisits the Indian Air Force’s role in the 1999 Kargil War. The military drama follows the Golden Arrows Squadron as young IAF personnel are pushed into a high-altitude operation after strategic positions are occupied across difficult mountain terrain.
The series premiered on Netflix on 7 August.
- Ted Lasso Season 4 — Apple TV+
Ted Lasso is back, but the pitch looks rather different this time. Jason Sudeikis returns as Ted, who swaps AFC Richmond’s men’s side for a second-division women’s football team, the Lady Greyhounds.
Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein and Brendan Hunt return, alongside a new set of players and characters. The fourth season began streaming on 7 August, putting women’s football at the heart of the next chapter.
- The Super Mario Galaxy Movie — JioHotstar
Mario is going intergalactic. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach on a space-bound adventure after Bowser Jr. kidnaps Princess Rosalina and attempts to harness her powers for a powerful weapon.
The animated film features returning voice stars including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black. It is available on JioHotstar from 7 August in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
- Our Sticky Love — Netflix
For viewers looking for romance with a mystery twist, Netflix’s Korean romantic comedy Our Sticky Love follows prosecutor Go Eun-sae, played by Ha Young, who loses her memory while investigating a criminal organisation.
She wakes up with no idea who she is and encounters Jang Tae-ha, played by Jung Hae-in, a boxing coach who claims to be her boyfriend. As the pair settle into life together in a small town, Eun-sae begins piecing together her identity.
The series premiered on 7 August.
- Sterling Point — Amazon Prime Video
Sterling Point brings coming-of-age drama, romance and family secrets to Prime Video. Created by Megan Park, the eight-episode series follows 17-year-old Annie Jacobson, played by Ella Rubin, whose life takes an unexpected turn after she inherits her estranged grandfather’s island in Canada.
Raised in New York with her twin brother Connor, played by Keen Ruffalo, Annie’s move to the island introduces new friendships and romances while opening the door to secrets surrounding her family and past.
The series released on 5 August.
- Lenin — ZEE5
Akhil Akkineni leads Telugu rural action drama Lenin, directed by Murali Kishor Abburu. The film also stars Bhagyashri Borse, Easwari Rao and Pramod Panju and combines village life, action and romance around its titular protagonist.
While some 7 August OTT lists included Lenin, reports from NDTV Profit and Filmibeat cited 21 August as its ZEE5 premiere date. The latter date should therefore be treated as the currently reported release date rather than 7 August.
- Main Vaapas Aaunga — Netflix
Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga brings Partition, memory and lost love together across two timelines. The drama stars Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari, Vedang Raina and Naseeruddin Shah.
At its centre is an elderly man’s memories of the 1947 Partition and a love left behind, which eventually lead his grandson towards a deeply personal journey involving separation, longing and the desire to return to his childhood home in Pakistan.
The film is now streaming on Netflix.
- Uyir — JioHotstar
Malayalam thriller Uyir puts a probationary police officer at the centre of a mystery. Roshan Mathew plays sub-inspector Ajeeb Rahman, whose investigation begins with the discovery of a decomposed woman’s body in an abandoned well.
What initially appears to be a single case soon expands as Ajeeb investigates the woman’s identity and finds links to other missing-person cases. Directed by M. Padmakumar, Uyir began streaming on JioHotstar on 4 August and is available in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
- One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 2 — Netflix
The Buendía family’s long, strange journey reaches its final chapter with Part 2 of Netflix’s adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.
The seven-episode second part, which premiered on 5 August, moves through the later generations of the Buendía family as Macondo opens up to the outside world. The story spans the remaining five decades of the saga, with progress gradually giving way to decay as the family’s cycle moves towards its conclusion.
- The Shards — JioHotstar
If psychological crime is more your weekend speed, The Shards heads to 1980s Los Angeles, where wealthy students at an elite school find themselves caught in the shadow of a serial killer targeting teenagers.
Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel and adapted by Ryan Murphy, the series follows the arrival of a mysterious new student as suspicion begins to swirl around the killings. Kaia Gerber, Graham Campbell, Igby Rigney, Hayes Warner, Wes Bentley and Evan Rachel Wood feature in the cast.
