Instagram rolls out First Draft to simplify Reels editing for creators

One-tap tool trims pauses and clips, giving creators a quick starting point for Reels

Mumbai: Instagram has introduced First Draft, a new built-in editing tool designed to make creating Reels faster by automatically trimming clips and removing pauses.

The tool allows creators to select multiple video clips and generate a preliminary edit with a single tap. First Draft cuts pauses and trims footage to create a ready-to-edit sequence, allowing creators to move more quickly from raw footage to the creative stage.

The edits are non-destructive, meaning creators can review and modify the suggested sequence before publishing. They can adjust or reorder clips, change the start and end points, restore removed footage or reset the project to the original clips.

First Draft is aimed at simplifying some of the more time-consuming early stages of short-form video production, particularly for talking-head videos, vlogs, travel content and other formats that involve multiple clips.

The feature works directly within Instagram’s Reels creation flow, reducing the need for creators to move footage between Instagram and third-party editing applications for basic trimming.

Instagram says First Draft uses audio and motion detection to identify pauses and sections that can be shortened. It does not require generative AI to create the initial edit.

Creators can access the feature by opening Instagram’s create menu, selecting Reel, choosing the clips they want to use and tapping First Draft. Once the initial sequence is generated, they can add music, captions, text, effects and other elements before sharing the Reel.

The rollout comes as short-form video creation becomes increasingly competitive, with platforms and standalone editing apps looking to make production quicker and more accessible.

By bringing automated trimming into its own app, Instagram is effectively taking some of the rough-cut work off creators’ plates. The focus then shifts from cutting footage to shaping the story, which is where the real creative work begins.
