MUMBAI: Suitcases are getting lighter, but travel calendars are getting a lot busier. India’s Gen Z is rewriting the rules of travel, swapping the traditional annual getaway for a steady stream of shorter, more spontaneous escapes, according to a new Airbnb report. The study, titled Never the Same: The New Rules of Gen Z Travel in India, reveals that travel is no longer viewed as a once-a-year event by young Indians. Instead, it has evolved into an ongoing lifestyle choice driven by flexibility, self-expression and a desire for unique experiences.

The numbers tell the story. Nearly 70 per cent of Gen Z travellers prefer taking three short trips instead of one long holiday, while 87 per cent favour breaks lasting less than a week. Airbnb’s own data shows searches by Indian Gen Z users for the summer travel season jumped more than 30 per cent year-on-year, with domestic stays of two to six nights emerging as the fastest-growing format, surging nearly 80 per cent.

Forget months of planning and colour-coded itineraries. Today’s young travellers are embracing spontaneity, with 66 per cent booking trips just days or weeks before departure. Meanwhile, 67 per cent say no two trips they take look alike, reflecting a growing appetite for variety over routine.

Travel, increasingly, has become a form of personal branding. According to the report, 87 per cent believe the way they travel reflects who they are, while 92 per cent want their destinations and stays to match their personal tastes rather than follow popular trends. In fact, 90 per cent actively seek destinations that have not gone viral online or become social media hotspots.

Perhaps the biggest shift is where travellers are placing their focus. Accommodation is no longer just a place to sleep. Nearly 63 per cent said they have chosen a destination because of a particular stay, while more than four in five respondents consider accommodation a crucial part of planning a trip. With 78 per cent spending at least half of their travel time at their chosen property, the stay itself is becoming part of the experience.

The report also highlights the rise of social travel. For three in four Gen Z travellers, the company matters more than the destination. Friends emerged as the preferred travel companions, followed by family. Reflecting this trend, Airbnb reported that domestic group bookings among Indian Gen Z users grew nearly 55 per cent year-on-year, making it the fastest-growing travel category.

Rigid schedules are also falling out of favour. Around 64 per cent deliberately leave parts of their itinerary unplanned, while nearly two-thirds travel simply to relax, recharge and embrace the joy of doing very little. Nature escapes, slow travel experiences and food exploration ranked among the most popular travel pursuits.

The findings suggest that India’s youngest travellers are no longer collecting destinations like trophies. Instead, they are chasing experiences, connections and moments that feel personal. For Gen Z, the perfect holiday is less about ticking off landmarks and more about writing a different story every time they pack a bag.
