MUMBAI: Star Plus and JioHotstar are rolling the dice on a format that has already proven its worth across ten countries. India Ke Top 1%, the Indian avatar of the internationally acclaimed The 1% Club, premieres on 5 September, fronted by Anil Kapoor in a role tailor made for Bollywood’s perennial everyman.

The format’s global run, spanning the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Greece, Australia, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico and the United States, gives Star Plus a rare luxury in Indian non-fiction programming: a concept that arrives pre-validated. Rather than the fact-recall gymnastics that have defined the quiz genre on Indian television for decades, the show leans on logic, observation and common sense, a deliberate pivot designed to make every viewer at home feel like a contestant rather than a spectator.

That distinction matters more than it might appear. Indian general entertainment has long struggled to make quiz formats work beyond a niche, well-informed audience. By reframing intelligence as instinct and presence of mind rather than encyclopaedic knowledge, India Ke Top 1% is betting it can widen the funnel considerably, pulling in family audiences of every age who might otherwise switch off a traditional trivia contest. The channel’s decision to stage a lavish launch event, drawing industry leaders and dignitaries who played the game live, suggests Star Plus sees this as one of its marquee non-fiction bets of the year.

Kapoor’s casting reinforces the strategy. His long-cultivated image as India’s biggest common man gives the format an accessible face, someone whose own on-screen persona has always suggested relatability over intellectual superiority, precisely the tone the show needs to land with a mass family audience rather than a quiz-club crowd.

The simulcast on JioHotstar is the other half of the calculation. Pairing a linear premiere with digital availability lets Star Plus capture appointment viewing while JioHotstar mops up the streaming-first audience, a now-standard playbook for tentpole non-fiction launches but one that matters especially for a format built around real-time audience participation. With the festive season around the corner and family viewing patterns at their annual peak, the timing looks anything but accidental.
