Shark Tank India tells founders: don’t be a parrot
New #DontBeATota campaign skewers startup jargon as season six opens for entries
MUMBAI: Shark Tank India has a message for every founder who has ever dropped “burn rate” into a sentence just to sound the part: the jargon is not the job. The show has launched a cheeky new campaign, #DontBeATota, as registrations open for its sixth season, and its target is the growing habit of mistaking startup vocabulary for startup substance.
The premise is simple and, frankly, overdue. Valuation, burn rate and EBITDA have become dinner-table talk in India’s startup circles, but the campaign asks whether all that fluent jargon has started to crowd out the business itself. Its answer, delivered with plenty of humour, is that conviction, execution and resilience still matter far more than a founder’s command of the lingo.
Fronting the campaign is Tota, a parrot mascot thoroughly convinced that reeling off buzzwords he barely understands is enough to win the Sharks over. It rarely is. The character is a gentle jab at a very real type: the founder who sounds like an entrepreneur without necessarily being one, and the campaign uses him to make its case that memorising the vocabulary is easy, building the business is not.
The timing tracks neatly with the show’s own trajectory. Over five seasons, Shark Tank India has pulled entrepreneurship into the mainstream, giving founders across the country a shot at pitching, funding and building lasting companies. Season six, the show says, is looking for exactly that: founders with real clarity and substance, whether they are first-timers or seasoned operators, who know their business inside out.
Aman Gupta, co-founder of boAt and founder of OFF/BEAT, put it plainly: if reciting buzzwords built businesses, everyone would be investing in parrots. He credited the show with mainstreaming entrepreneurship but was clear that the sharks are not hunting for polished vocabulary. They want founders who understand their numbers, solve real problems and show up with the resilience to keep building.
Conceptualised by The Script Room, the campaign is now live as registrations for Shark Tank India Season 6 run on Sony LIV, with Lahori Zeera and L’Oréal Paris co-powering the season and White Gold and Lal Sweets on board as partners. The pitch to founders is clear enough: skip the jargon, bring the substance, and let the business do the talking.
