FRANCE: Every industry has its unofficial season opener, and for global television and streaming, that moment happens at Le Majestic Cannes. MIPCOM Cannes has announced that Merzigo, the media technology company reshaping how premium content gets distributed and monetised, is returning as headline partner of the Opening Night Party, renewing a partnership that worked well enough in 2025 to warrant an encore. This time round it is co-hosting with YouTube, with Evan Shapiro, the widely followed media cartographer, joining as Merzigo’s special guest.

The party itself is scheduled for Monday, 12th October at 19:00 at the Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes, marking the official start of MIPCOM Cannes 2026, which runs from 12th to 15th October. Billing itself as the world’s largest gateway to the international media and content business, the market pulls in studios, broadcasters, streaming platforms, distributors, creators, brands and technology companies from more than 100 countries, and the opening night event has become the traditional moment where the industry’s key players size each other up before a week of dealmaking begins.

What makes this pairing notable is less the party itself and more what it signals about where the power in global content distribution currently sits. Merzigo operates one of the largest premium content networks on social platforms, running more than 6,000 official channels across over 30 languages and generating upward of 17 billion monthly views, an integrated model spanning technology, content operations, localisation, rights management and advertising monetisation. That scale makes Merzigo one of YouTube’s leading monetisation partners, and the two co-hosting the industry’s flagship opening event is a fairly explicit statement that the creator economy and platform-driven distribution are no longer the disruptive outsiders at MIPCOM, they are now setting the agenda.

Yigit Dogan Celik, chairman and chief executive of Merzigo, made that positioning explicit, noting that audiences now demand control and crave great entertainment, and that working across 6,000 channels as one of YouTube’s leading monetisation partners gives the company a distinctive vantage point on how premium content is evolving in what he called a pivotal moment for the industry. Pedro Pina, vice president of YouTube for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, struck a similar note, framing the partnership as a celebration of a media business increasingly driven by fandom-fuelled IP, global audience scale and commercial partnerships that span screens of every size, from mobile to connected television.

Lucy Smith, director of MIPCOM Cannes and MIPJunior, welcomed the return of both partners, describing the Opening Night Party as the event that sets the tone for the week ahead and reflects the sheer breadth of today’s global entertainment business, spanning broadcasters, streamers, creators, technology companies and brands under one roof. Merzigo is not stopping at the party either. The company will maintain a dedicated presence at Stand C16.E throughout the market, backed by a week-long programme of meetings, panels and networking sessions aimed at exploring the future of content distribution and digital monetisation, a signal that this collaboration with YouTube is meant to open conversations that continue well beyond opening night.
