US TV icon Dick Clark suffers stroke

MUMBAI: Veteran US television host Dick Clark whose company produces the Golden Globe Awards is in a hospital in Los Angeles after suffering a mild stroke.

As a result Clark will not attend the nominations ceremony for the Golden Globes which will happen later in the day.

Clark is still scheduled to welcome in the New Year on the ABC network. He has been doing this for 33 years. The presenter issued a statement expressing optimism of getting better in time to lead the festivities in New York’s Times Square. Clark’s publicist Paul Shefrin said that the television host was “recovering” and there was no cause for alarm.

Clark was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 for his contribution to the music industry. His music show American Bandstand has achieved iconic status. It first broadcast in 1952, and attracted an audience of 20 million people after it was picked up by ABC in 1957. It has ben airing in one form or another over the course of 40 years.

In a statement Clark said, “The doctors tell me I should be back in the swing of things before too long so I’m hopeful to be able to make it to Times Square to help lead the country in bringing in the New Year once again.”
