NEW DELHI: Indian pubcaster Prasar Bharati generated revenue to the tune of Rs 8236.2 million in the financial year 2004-05 ended 31 March 2005, which is still far below the expenses it incurs annually.

Out of the total revenue mopped up by Prasar Bharati, the lion’s share has been earned by Doordarshan (Rs 6652.7 million), while All India Radio’s earnings stood at Rs 1583.5 million, signifying a slowing down of growth pace compared to previous year.

Giving these information to Lok Sabha (Lower House) today, information and broadcasting minister Jaipal Reddy said DD National channel continues to maintain its “pre-eminent position as the most watched TV channel in the country.”

As regards AIR, it has a network of 215 stations, which provide coverage to 99.13 per cent of the population and reaches 91.42 per cent area of the country. A few private FM players are functioning in selected cities only.

With the launch of the pubcaster’s DTH service, DD Direct+, viewership of both DD and AIR has increased, the minister said.

Computerisation of AIR centres: The government proposes to undertake the computerization of Akashwani stations to provide better services.

Plan schemes amounting to Rs 1,180 million have been approved for total computerization of AIR networks. The work will be completed during 10th Plan period subject to availability of funds, according to Reddy.
