Spider Man Brand New Day stays in more cinemas than new releases
Sony Marvel blockbuster holds 3,678 screens and targets $22 million to $27 million
MUMBAI: Spider-Man is proving that staying power can be just as super as swinging power. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day heads into its fifth weekend, the Sony-Marvel blockbuster is holding on to more cinema screens than any other film, despite two major new releases entering the market.
The film will play in 3,678 theatres this weekend, only a modest drop from the 4,006 screens it occupied last weekend. That gives Brand New Day a wider theatrical footprint than both of this week’s newcomers and underlines its remarkable run since its July 31 release.
Warner Bros’ Coyote vs. Acme comes closest, opening in 3,575 theatres. The Looney Tunes legal comedy has earned strong reviews, with a 95 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 92 per cent audience score. Despite that reception, the film is tracking for a relatively modest $14 million to $22 million domestic opening.
The release itself is something of a second act for Coyote vs. Acme. Warner Bros had originally planned to shelve the film for a tax write-down, making its theatrical release a notable turnaround even if its opening numbers do not make it an immediate hit.
Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars is opening in 3,330 theatres, putting it just behind Coyote vs. Acme. The film is tracking for a domestic debut of around $9 million to $14 million, although critical reception has been largely negative, with The Hollywood Reporter among the outlets giving it a positive review.
Meanwhile, Brand New Day continues to build an unusually strong box-office record. The film has already generated $2.24 billion and counting globally and has collected a string of records along the way.
Those include the biggest opening day at $169 million, the biggest domestic opening weekend at $360 million, the biggest Monday ever at $47 million and the fastest run to $500 million, reaching the milestone in just seven days.
The film is currently the second-biggest movie ever domestically and the highest-grossing film of 2026. Its latest weekend is expected to add another $22 million to $27 million domestically.
If that projection holds, Brand New Day could move past Titanic on the list of the highest-grossing films of all time, giving Sony and Marvel another reason to keep the web-slinger firmly on the big screen.
