MUMBAI: The Don dispute is refusing to bow out quietly. Ranveer Singh has formally contested the reported Rs 45 crore compensation claim linked to his exit from Don 3, taking the long-running disagreement with filmmaker Farhan Akhtar and Excel Entertainment into another round.

According to media reports, Singh’s legal team submitted his formal defence before the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) on August 18. The actor has also warned that he could pursue legal action if the industry body rules against him.

The dispute goes back around eight months to Singh’s decision to step away from Don 3, which was to be produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Singh had been announced as the new face of the franchise in 2023, taking over the lead role after Shah Rukh Khan’s two Don films.

The producers have reportedly sought Rs 45 crore in compensation, citing expenses and losses associated with the project. The claim is now at the centre of the dispute, with Singh’s side rejecting the producers’ position.

His legal representatives have reportedly asked IMPPA not to intervene in the matter and have indicated that the actor could approach the courts if the association passes an adverse order.

The latest submission follows earlier attempts to place the dispute before IMPPA. Reports have said that Singh’s father, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, had also approached the association and submitted documents in support of the actor’s position.

The dispute could therefore move from an industry forum to the courtroom if either side chooses to escalate the matter. For now, IMPPA remains part of the process, with the actor’s latest response putting his position formally on record.

The controversy has also clouded one of Bollywood’s anticipated action franchises. Singh’s departure from Don 3 left the project’s future uncertain after his 2023 announcement as the new Don.

For now, the Rs 45 crore claim remains contested, while Singh’s latest legal move makes one thing clear: this particular Don story is far from its final act.
