MUMBAI: The mutants are finally making their Marvel move. After years of speculation, screen tests and deal-making, Marvel has unveiled the cast of its new X-Men film at D23, setting the superhero team on a fresh course inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film will star Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will play the villain Mr Sinister.

The film is set for release on 5 May 2028 and will be directed by Jake Schreier, who previously helmed Thunderbolts.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige appeared on stage with Sink and Schreier to introduce the cast, while Driver joined through a video message. Driver said he and Feige had been discussing his entry into the MCU for years before finding a project and characters that felt right.

Not every casting announcement came as a surprise. Sink was already confirmed as Jean Grey, having made her debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day last month. Connor had been reported as Cyclops, while Weaving was previously linked to Emma Frost. Abbott was also reported as a strong contender for Professor X before the D23 reveal.

Navarrette, who rose to prominence with the summer breakout Obsession, joins the cast as Rogue, while Boyd, known for her Broadway work in & Juliet, will play Storm. Abbott, whose screen credits include Girls and Wolfman, was also nominated at the most recent Tonys for Death of a Salesman.

Feige, however, cautioned that the D23 announcement does not represent the complete cast, leaving Marvel with more mutant cards still to play.

The announcement closes a long chapter of speculation that began when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, bringing the X-Men film rights into the company’s portfolio.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1963, the X-Men became one of Marvel’s defining comic-book properties, with Professor X originally leading Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel and Iceman against Magneto.

The franchise’s first major modern film adaptation arrived with 2000’s X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer. The film helped usher in the modern superhero-movie era and turned Hugh Jackman into a global star through his portrayal of Wolverine.

Several stars from the 2000s X-Men films are already set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer. Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also part of the Doomsday cast.

The 2010s reboot featured James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique and Nicholas Hoult as Beast, although those actors have not followed the same path into the MCU as the returning 2000s cast.

Now, with a new generation of mutants assembled and a 5 May 2028 date locked in, Marvel’s X-Men era is officially beginning to take shape.
