MUMBAI: Tata Motors has shifted its sales into a higher gear, with passenger vehicles accelerating sharply and commercial vehicles putting their foot firmly on the accelerator in the second quarter of FY27.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported domestic sales of 1,96,674 units in Q2 FY27, up 40.3 per cent from 1,40,189 units in the corresponding quarter last year. Including exports of 5,049 units, total passenger vehicle sales for the July-September quarter stood at 2,01,723 units, compared with 1,44,397 units in Q2 FY26.

The SUV portfolio was the main engine of this growth, with the Nexon and Punch together accounting for more than three-fifths of Tata Motors’ domestic passenger vehicle sales. The company’s wider performance was also supported by a strong commercial vehicle business, which delivered growth across both domestic and international markets.

The UVC category, comprising the Nexon and Punch, recorded domestic sales of 1,19,324 units in Q2 FY27, compared with 86,782 units in the year-ago quarter. That represents a rise of 37.5 per cent, with the two models contributing around 61 per cent of Tata Motors’ domestic passenger vehicle sales during the quarter.

The Compact category also moved higher, although at a more measured pace. Sales of the Zest, Aeries, Tiago, Tigor and Altroz stood at 36,574 units, compared with 33,918 units in Q2 FY26, while production increased to 38,555 units from 35,635 units.

The bigger jump came from the UVI category, which includes the Curvv and Sierra. Domestic sales surged to 25,365 units from just 5,274 units a year earlier, while production climbed to 27,238 units from 5,289 units, reflecting the significantly larger contribution from the category during the quarter.

The UV2 category, comprising the Safari, Harrier and Sumo, recorded domestic sales of 15,411 units in Q2 FY27, compared with 14,215 units in Q2 FY26. Across the reported passenger vehicle categories, Tata Motors produced 2,02,253 units during the quarter, up from 1,40,903 units a year earlier.

Exports provided an additional lift to the passenger vehicle numbers, rising to 5,049 units in Q2 FY27 from 4,208 units in the corresponding quarter. The overall numbers point to a quarter in which Tata Motors’ SUV-led portfolio did much of the heavy lifting, while newer products helped widen the contribution from its utility vehicle range.

Commercial vehicles, meanwhile, were not content to sit in the passenger vehicle’s rear-view mirror. Tata Motors sold 1,35,114 commercial vehicles across domestic and international markets in Q2 FY27, a 42.7 per cent increase from 94,681 units in Q2 FY26.

Domestic commercial vehicle sales rose 30.9 per cent to 1,13,982 units from 87,061 units. Heavy commercial vehicle truck sales increased 40.3 per cent to 33,756 units, while intermediate and light commercial vehicle truck sales grew 24.4 per cent to 20,949 units.

Passenger carriers also recorded strong momentum, with sales increasing 35.2 per cent to 15,455 units. Small commercial vehicles, cargo vehicles and pickups climbed 26.2 per cent to 43,822 units, adding further weight to the domestic CV performance.

The international business delivered an even sharper acceleration. Commercial vehicle sales outside India jumped 177.3 per cent year on year to 21,132 units in Q2 FY27, compared with 7,620 units in Q2 FY26.

Tata Motors’ medium and heavy commercial vehicle business also continued to expand. Domestic MH&ICV sales increased 34.1 per cent to 55,582 units, while domestic and international sales combined rose 31.3 per cent to 59,194 units during the quarter.

Electric vehicles added another layer to the growth story, with Tata Motors reporting that EV volumes increased 2.4 times year on year in Q2 FY27. The company’s commercial vehicle momentum also carried into September, giving the quarter a strong finish.

Total commercial vehicle sales in September rose 42.4 per cent year on year to 51,062 units from 35,862 units in September 2025. Domestic CV sales increased 31.2 per cent to 43,487 units from 33,148 units, while international sales jumped 179.1 per cent to 7,575 units.

The company, however, is keeping one eye on the road ahead. Tata Motors has flagged commodity costs, diesel prices, potential interest rate hikes and broader global uncertainties as factors that could influence the operating environment in the coming months.

At the same time, the company expects several demand drivers to support the second half of FY27. Sustained government capital expenditure, a post-monsoon recovery in mining and construction, rising e-commerce activity and the festive season are expected to support freight and transportation demand.

For the passenger vehicle business, the Q2 numbers underline how strongly Tata Motors’ SUV portfolio is shaping its domestic sales mix. With the Nexon and Punch alone accounting for around 61 per cent of domestic PV sales, the models remain central to the company’s ability to keep the momentum rolling.

The passenger vehicle disclosure was filed under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015, covering production, domestic sales and exports for July-September 2026. The sales data is also scheduled to be released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), putting Tata Motors’ latest quarter firmly on the industry’s wider sales dashboard.
