Limited-edition toffee celebrates India-Italy friendship with Blinkit-exclusive launch

MUMBAI: Looks like diplomacy has found a sweet new flavour, and this time it’s dusted with cocoa instead of protocol. Parle has given its iconic Melody toffee an Italian twist, launching a limited-edition Tiramisu variant inspired by a viral moment involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The new Melody Tiramisu is available exclusively on Blinkit in a 180-gram pack, with the company positioning it as a limited-time offering in the coffee candy category.

The launch follows a widely shared exchange during Modi’s visit to Italy earlier this year, when he gifted a pack of Melody toffees to Meloni at a bilateral meeting in Rome. The Italian Prime Minister later posted a video of the moment on social media, calling Melody a “very, very good toffee” — a clip that quickly travelled far beyond diplomatic circles and introduced the decades-old Indian confectionery brand to a global online audience.

Rather than letting the viral buzz fade, Parle has turned the moment into a product. The limited-edition packaging carries the message “Celebrating India-Italy Friendship”, while the choice of Tiramisu, one of Italy’s best-known desserts, gives the nostalgic Indian toffee a distinctly European makeover.

The launch also playfully taps into the internet phenomenon surrounding “Melodi,” the nickname coined by social media users by blending the surnames of Modi and Meloni. The term gained popularity after the two leaders were photographed together at global events, including the G20 Summit and COP28, spawning countless memes and posts across social media.

For Parle, the new variant is less about reinventing Melody and more about extending a cultural conversation. By pairing an internationally recognised Italian flavour with one of India’s most familiar confectionery brands, the company is blending nostalgia, diplomacy and internet culture into a single product.

For now, the Tiramisu edition remains exclusive to Blinkit, with Parle yet to indicate whether it will find its way onto supermarket shelves. Its long-term future is expected to depend on consumer response during the limited release.

Sometimes the sweetest marketing campaigns are the ones that weren’t planned in a boardroom. In Melody’s case, a diplomatic gift has turned into a confectionery crossover, proving that even global diplomacy can leave behind a lingering aftertaste.
