MUMBAI: India’s gold obsession is getting a patriotic polish. Jewellery brand Jos Alukkas has launched a new campaign, #ExchangeForTheNation, urging consumers to dust off forgotten bangles, unused chains and idle heirlooms not just to upgrade their jewellery boxes, but to help reduce India’s dependence on imported gold. The campaign arrives at a time when conversations around gold imports and foreign exchange reserves have moved beyond economics and into everyday consumer behaviour. Echoing the Prime Minister’s recent call to reduce dependence on imported commodities, including non-essential gold purchases for a year, the brand is positioning gold recycling as both a national and practical exercise.

Built around the message, “Wear What You Love. Be India’s Pride”, the initiative has been rolled out across all 60+ Jos Alukkas showrooms in the country.

And there is plenty of glitter attached to the proposition.

Customers exchanging old gold under the campaign can receive an additional Rs 2,000 on every sovereign exchanged, along with a flat 50% discount on making charges across selected gold jewellery collections.

But beneath the festive offers lies a larger economic pitch, India already holds one of the world’s largest reserves of privately owned gold, much of it sitting idle in lockers and cupboards rather than circulating through the economy.

Jos Alukkas managing director Paul Alukkas said the campaign is designed to encourage consumers to rethink how existing gold resources can be utilised more effectively within the country.

Rather than relying entirely on newly imported gold, the campaign pushes for recycling old jewellery and bringing unused gold back into circulation, a move the company says could also support the domestic jewellery ecosystem and livelihoods connected to it.

The campaign also taps into a growing shift in consumer sentiment, where jewellery purchases are increasingly tied not only to style and investment, but also to sustainability and conscious consumption.

Because in today’s economy, even old gold is being asked to pull its weight and perhaps its patriotic duty too.
