BENGALURU: Jishnu Sen, who passed away after a long, gutsy battle with illness, was never one for the slow lane. A strategic marketer by training and a business leader by choice, he spent over three decades injecting pure adrenaline into the veins of the Indo-Asian advertising and corporate landscape. He did not just manage brands; he built universes. From the high-stakes boardrooms of New York to the chaotic, hyper-growth ecosystems of Bengaluru’s consumer tech startups, Sen operated with a singular, fierce life force.

He was the consummate “C” level heavyweight who never lost the street-smart hunger of an account executive. Having traversed four Asian cities and a stint in the Big Apple, his career footprint was massive. Whether he was steering multi-million-dollar global accounts or mentoring greenhorn founders on growth marketing, he brought the same trademark mixture of razor-sharp data and raw, intuitive insight to the table. He was a lifer in the truest sense—wedded to the craft of the big idea.

Sen’s professional trajectory reads like a masterclass in industry evolution. He cut his teeth in the nineties at JWT, mastering the foundational rules of the game before moving on to Young & Rubicam in New York, where he ran the gargantuan Colgate-Palmolive account for the Asia-Pacific region.

But it was his seven-year streak at the helm of Grey Group that cemented his status as an industry titan. As president & CEO, he did not just steady the ship; he supercharged it. Under his watch, Grey more than doubled its business, crashing into the Economic Times top five agency rankings for the very first time. He collected new business wins and creative metal like pocket change, earning a rightful spot among the 20 most influential people in Indian advertising in 2014.

Never one to get comfortable, Sen pivoted seamlessly as the digital paradigm shifted. He took on the mantle of director of brand strategy at Essar Telecom Retail, masterminded retail onslaughts as chief marketing officer for Big Bazaar, and eventually transitioned into the frenetic world of startup advisory. His later years saw him lending his formidable brand muscles to modern disruptors like Porter and Dealshare. For Sen, it was simple: if it did not scale, it did not interest him.

Jishnu Sen lived life with the amplifier turned all the way up to eleven. He leaves behind an indelible legacy of iconic campaigns, transformed balance sheets, and a generation of marketers who learned from him that strategy without passion is just paperwork. He made the brands bigger, the rooms louder, and the industry vastly more interesting. The marquee is dimmer without him.
