HO CHI MINH CITY: It is a case of media moving into a new gear as dentsu Vietnam has appointed Amit Thakur as its chief executive officer for media, handing the experienced industry leader the responsibility of steering the agency’s next chapter of growth.

Thakur revealed that he has already spent three months in the role, describing the period as one of intense learning and collaboration. In a professional update, he said he had been working closely with clients and teams across the business while gaining a deeper understanding of Vietnam’s fast-evolving marketing landscape.

“Three months into the role, I feel fortunate to be surrounded by exceptional people,” said Thakur. “The past few months have been a period of deep learning, immersing myself and working alongside an energised team, and partnering with clients who are helping shape the future of marketing and growth in this market.”

The appointment marks another milestone in a career that spans more than a decade across some of Asia’s largest advertising and media markets. Before joining dentsu Vietnam, Thakur served as managing partner at WPP Media in Vietnam, where he focused on business growth, partnerships and commercial performance.

Prior to that, he spent nearly eight years at Mindshare, holding several senior leadership positions across Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia. His responsibilities ranged from leading strategy for major multinational brands to overseeing large media operations and cross-functional teams. During his tenure, he worked on accounts including Unilever and Nestlé and was associated with multiple industry award-winning campaigns.

Earlier in his career, Thakur also led the media function for consumer brands at Tata Chemicals in India, helping establish internal media processes while overseeing traditional and digital advertising initiatives. His work earned recognition at industry events including the ABBY Awards and MADDY’s.

Looking ahead, Thakur said the focus will be on nurturing talent, strengthening client relationships and helping businesses navigate an industry increasingly influenced by technology, data, creativity and artificial intelligence.

“I am excited to work alongside our teams and partners, nurture exceptional talent, strengthen client partnerships and drive meaningful growth for our clients in an era being reshaped by technology, data, creativity and AI,” said Thakur.

Academically, Thakur holds a Master of Management Studies in marketing from Mumbai University and recently completed a certification in managing the company of the future from the University of London.

As brands continue to adapt to rapid technological change and evolving consumer behaviour, dentsu Vietnam is placing a seasoned regional leader at the helm. With experience across multiple markets and a strong track record in media leadership, Thakur now faces the task of turning momentum into long-term growth in one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic advertising markets.
