MUMBAI: Sumit Zaveri is getting a bigger bite of the Burger King business. The long-serving finance chief has been appointed chief executive officer of Burger King India, marking a shift from the company’s financial stewardship to its top leadership role.

Zaveri has been with Burger King India since September 2019, serving as its chief financial officer for more than seven years. His elevation brings an experienced finance professional to the helm of the quick-service restaurant (QSR) business.

Before joining Burger King India, Zaveri was CFO of Nature’s Basket between March 2017 and September 2019. He also spent nearly five years at Tata Starbucks, from July 2012 to February 2017, where he headed finance, IT and legal functions.

His career includes an 11-year stint at The Indian Hotels Company, where he served as general manager of finance from February 2001 to June 2012, handling corporate accounts, finance and treasury.

A qualified chartered accountant and cost and works accountant, Zaveri also holds a bachelor of commerce degree. He completed his professional qualifications through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.

His appointment comes with a broad operational brief beyond the numbers. The move places a finance veteran with experience across hospitality, premium grocery retail and QSR at the head of Burger King India’s business.

From managing the books to calling the shots, Zaveri’s next assignment will be to steer the burger chain’s growth in a fiercely competitive Indian food-service market.
