BENGALURU: Bigbasket has a new chief executive. The Tata-owned quick commerce platform has appointed Amit Nanda to the top job, ending the founding era led by Hari Menon and signalling that the company is ready for a new phase of growth in one of India’s most fiercely contested retail battlegrounds.

Nanda arrives from Amazon India, where he served as director of selling partner services, running one of the company’s largest businesses and overseeing the entire third-party marketplace ecosystem. His 11-year tenure at Amazon spanned marketplace, product, technology and private brands, and included a pivotal role in building and scaling the company’s owned brands portfolio. Before Amazon, he held leadership positions at Hindustan Unilever and Citibank, giving him a career that cuts across consumer goods, brand-building and digital commerce.

Nanda said he was excited to build on the trust bigbasket had established with millions of consumers across India. “Combining bigbasket’s customer-first values with the trusted legacy of the Tata Group creates a strong foundation for the future,” he said, adding that he had deep admiration for the private labels business Menon and the team had built.

Menon, who co-founded bigbasket and has led it since inception, will remain on the board and take on a mentoring role alongside co-founder Vipul Parekh. “Having built bigbasket from its inception to its current position as one of India’s most trusted consumer platforms, I am delighted to welcome Amit as CEO,” Menon said.

Sajith Sivanandan, chief executive and managing director of Tata Digital and chairman of bigbasket, said Nanda’s experience in leading large-scale businesses and driving product and technology strategy made him an excellent choice. “Bigbasket plays a critical role in Tata Digital’s consumer ecosystem,” he said.

The platform Nanda inherits is substantial. Bigbasket serves over 25 million customers across more than 60 cities, including tier-2 and tier-3 markets, offering more than 30,000 products through a network of over 900 dark stores.

In quick commerce, the race for India’s grocery wallet has never been more intense. With a seasoned operator now at the wheel, bigbasket is betting it can pick up the pace.
