San Jose, Calif.: Adobe is doubling down on its AI ambitions, striking a definitive agreement to buy Topaz Labs, the outfit behind some of the industry’s sharpest video and image enhancement models. The tie-up bolts Topaz’s enhancement muscle onto Adobe’s Firefly and Creative Cloud stable, giving photographers, video editors and enterprises alike the firepower to polish footage to a professional shine.

Adobe has built its creative empire on tools like Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere, layering AI on top through Firefly, its all-in-one creative studio, and Firefly Services, a suite of generative APIs for enterprise clients. Topaz Labs slots neatly into that machine, bringing two decades of expertise in sharpening detail, stripping out noise, restoring old footage and upscaling resolution, all skills increasingly vital as creators blend traditionally shot material with AI-generated content.

Topaz’s client list already reads like a who’s who of the film world, counting Asteria Film Co and documentary-maker Robert Stone among the professionals leaning on its Emmy-winning technology. The company’s proprietary models handle everything from stabilisation and frame interpolation to full-blown footage restoration, and its Neurostream technology allows hefty AI models to run directly on consumer devices rather than depending on the cloud.

David Wadhwani, president of Adobe’s creativity and productivity business, said the acquisition builds on strong demand for the company’s AI tooling, arguing that as creators increasingly mix captured and generated visuals, Topaz will help them produce that content at sharper quality and higher resolution. Topaz Labs chief executive Eric Yang, who will stay on to lead his team after the deal closes, said the partnership reflects a shared belief that technology ought to serve human creativity, not replace it.

Once the ink dries, Topaz Labs will keep selling standalone products through its own website, with existing customers promised continued support. But make no mistake: the real prize for Adobe is folding Topaz’s on-device AI wizardry straight into Firefly and Creative Cloud, arming millions of creators with tools once locked behind high-end hardware or costly cloud subscriptions. In an AI arms race where speed and polish win the day, Adobe has just bought itself a serious edge.
