MUMBAI: Cinema gets a little meta when a filmmaker makes a film about a filmmaker and Padatik is ready to roll. Srijit Mukherji’s acclaimed biographical drama on legendary filmmaker Mrinal Sen will premiere exclusively on Bangla ZEE5 on 28 August 2026.

The film traces Sen’s life, creative evolution and cinematic legacy while looking beyond the celebrated filmmaker to the man behind the work. It follows significant chapters of his journey and his contribution to Indian parallel cinema, blending history, cinema and personal emotion.

Chanchal Chowdhury takes on the role of Mrinal Sen, with Monami Ghosh portraying Geeta Sen and Korak Samanta playing a young Mrinal Sen.

Directed by Mukherji, Padatik brings together two generations of filmmakers through a story about one of Bengal’s most influential cinematic voices. The film explores the experiences and artistic choices that shaped Sen’s career, while presenting his legacy through a contemporary cinematic lens.

Rusa Banerjee, Business Head, Bangla ZEE5, said the platform expects the film to resonate with audiences, particularly viewers connected to Bengal’s cinematic heritage, while making the story accessible to audiences digitally.

The premiere adds another significant Bengali title to Bangla ZEE5’s slate, with Padatik offering viewers a chance to revisit the life and work of a filmmaker whose cinema became closely associated with India’s parallel film movement.

Srijit Mukherji’s Padatik will stream exclusively on Bangla ZEE5 from 28 August 2026.
