Skydance and Movistar Plus extend alliance with joint Spanish originals
The two-year deal retains HBO Max on Movistar Plus and adds local series, Warner Bros films and select TV channels
MUMBAI: Skydance and Movistar Plus are giving their partnership a new script, with Spanish stories set to take a bigger role in a deal that spans streaming, films and original productions. The companies have expanded their strategic alliance through a new two-year global agreement, deepening a partnership they describe as one of the most significant in Spain’s audiovisual industry.
Under the agreement, Movistar Plus will continue to offer HBO Max as part of its streaming platform. The deal also covers select Skydance television channels, major theatrical releases from Warner Bros. Pictures and new content agreements. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The biggest addition is a joint originals initiative that will see selected Spanish series released under the Movistar Plus and HBO Original label. The companies describe it as a first for the Spanish market, with the aim of giving locally developed stories greater national and international reach.
The first title announced is Veredicto, a Movistar Plus and HBO Original produced in collaboration with Ikiru Films and Luminol Media. Created by Eduard Sola, Pol Cortecans and Daniel González from an original idea by Carles Porta, the series will feature Nagore Aranburu, Ernesto Alterio, Alba Flores, Omar Ayuso, Secun de la Rosa, Alfredo Castro, Marc Soler, Júlia Mascort, Cris Blanco and Mamen Duch.
The partners have not yet shared further details about the series.
The second project is an untitled Movistar Plus and HBO Original series from Carles Porta and Los Moriarti, whose credits include Maspalomas, Marco and The Endless Trench. The series will star Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández.
The joint label is intended to expand the reach of Spanish productions while strengthening Movistar Plus’ commitment to original content and supporting local creative talent.
For subscribers, the agreement means continued access to HBO Max’s catalogue through the Movistar Plus platform, with content discovery and viewing integrated into a single environment.
The catalogue includes series such as The Pitt, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon and The White Lotus, alongside Warner Bros. and DC films, Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Harry Potter.
The renewed agreement also includes initiatives across streaming, television channels, films, original programming and sports rights. The companies said the expanded offering was designed to meet changing audience expectations while reinforcing Movistar Plus’ position in the Spanish entertainment market.
Movistar Plus chief executive Alfonso Gómez Palacio said the agreement would allow the company to continue offering customers a broad entertainment proposition, combining a unified viewing experience with established content brands.
Skydance managing director and executive vice-president for Southern Europe Alessandro Araimo said the expanded partnership would bring Spanish viewers influential franchises, films and series while supporting a new generation of creators and storytellers.
With HBO Max remaining part of its platform and two Spanish originals announced, Movistar Plus is strengthening its mix of international entertainment and home-grown storytelling. The new agreement puts local productions more firmly in the frame while keeping established global franchises within the same viewing destination.
