Prime Video launches JOJO, a Gujarati add-on subscription in India

New offering priced at Rs 299 a year expands Amazon’s regional content marketplace to over 30 add-ons

MUMBAI: Every streaming giant eventually learns the same lesson in India, national scale means nothing without regional depth. Prime Video appears to have taken that lesson rather seriously. The platform has launched JOJO, a new Gujarati add-on subscription, as its latest addition to a marketplace that now spans over 30 add-on services, and the pricing alone, an introductory Rs 299 a year, tells you exactly how aggressively Amazon wants Gujarati speaking audiences signed up before the renewal rate climbs to Rs 499.

JOJO is not a token regional gesture bolted onto a bigger catalogue. Its library runs deep, acclaimed Gujarati films such as Misri, Maharani, Jalso and Reva sit alongside a slate of originals including Love Station, Medal and Gadbad Gotalo, and, rather charmingly, an extensive collection of Gujarati nataks, the theatrical form that has long been a cultural staple in the state. That is a smart mix, films and originals draw scale, but nataks and cultural programming build the kind of loyalty that keeps a niche subscription sticky.

Gaurav Bhasin, head of AVOD business and marketplace at Prime Video India, framed the launch as part of a much bigger marketplace play, noting that add-on subscriptions have become a compelling gateway for streaming services and studios to expand their reach across the country. With more than 30 such add-ons now live spanning multiple languages and categories, Prime Video is positioning itself less as a single content library and more as the aggregation layer for India’s fragmented regional streaming landscape. That is a shrewd strategic bet, rather than compete title for title with dozens of regional players, Amazon simply becomes the one place customers go to find them all.

Dhruvin Shah, founder and chief executive of JOJO, called the tie-up a significant step in taking Gujarati content beyond geographical boundaries, and the logic holds up. A standalone Gujarati streaming app competing for wallet share and discoverability against giants is a hard sell, riding on Prime Video’s existing subscriber base and single sign-on convenience solves both problems at once.

The mechanics matter here too. Add-on subscriptions spare customers the now familiar headache of juggling multiple logins, passwords and billing cycles, instead consolidating watchlists, downloads and recommendations into a single Prime Video destination. For regional platforms like JOJO, that infrastructure is arguably more valuable than any marketing budget could buy, instant access to Prime Video’s existing user base and app real estate.

With Amazon MX Player now folded into Prime Video and the platform already spanning Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and more, JOJO’s addition rounds out a genuinely comprehensive regional offering. India’s streaming market has long been obsessed with subscriber numbers in the metros, this launch is a reminder that the next real battleground is regional depth, and Prime Video is quietly building a formidable moat there.
