MUMBAI: It’s a case of passing the remote. After helping shape one of the biggest success stories in modern entertainment, Reed Hastings has officially stepped away from Netflix’s boardroom, with veteran director Jay Hoag taking over as chairman.

Netflix has appointed Jay Hoag as chairman of its board, marking the end of an era for the streaming giant following the departure of co-founder Reed Hastings.

The company confirmed the leadership transition in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), stating that Hoag formally assumed the role after Netflix’s annual shareholders’ meeting on 4 June.

The move follows Hastings’ announcement in April that he would step down from the board to devote more time to philanthropy and other personal pursuits.

Few executives have left a bigger mark on the entertainment industry than Hastings. Under his leadership, Netflix evolved from a DVD-by-mail rental service into a global streaming powerhouse that fundamentally changed how audiences consume films and television series.

The company also navigated the challenges and opportunities presented by the COVID-19, a period that accelerated streaming adoption worldwide while many traditional entertainment businesses struggled with production disruptions and shuttered cinemas.

Hoag is no stranger to Netflix’s growth story. The investor and entrepreneur co-founded Technology Crossover Ventures, one of Silicon Valley’s best-known growth equity firms and a long-time investor in Netflix.

His association with the company stretches back nearly three decades. Hoag joined Netflix’s board in 1999 and has served as lead independent director for more than ten years, giving him a front-row seat to the company’s transformation from a start-up disruptor into a global media leader.

Beyond Netflix, Hoag currently serves on the boards of Zillow Group and Peloton Interactive, bringing extensive experience across technology, digital platforms and consumer-facing businesses.

The leadership handover comes at a pivotal moment for Netflix as competition intensifies across streaming, advertising-supported services continue to grow, and global content investments reshape the entertainment landscape.

While Hastings may be leaving the boardroom, his influence on Netflix’s culture and strategy remains deeply embedded in the company he helped build. With Hoag now taking the chair, Netflix begins its next chapter with a familiar hand guiding one of the world’s most influential media businesses.
