MUMBAI: The battle is getting lighter, but Krafton’s India ambitions are getting heavier. Krafton India has confirmed that BGMI Lite will launch in India by the end of 2026, bringing another entry point into its popular battle royale franchise as the company looks to reach a wider pool of mobile gamers.

The new title will sit alongside Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) rather than replace it. While Krafton has not yet revealed its gameplay features, supported devices or technical specifications, accessibility appears to be at the heart of the move.

The word ‘Lite’ naturally brings back memories of Krafton’s earlier PUBG Lite and PUBG Mobile Lite, which were built for devices with lower storage, RAM and processing capabilities. Krafton, however, has not confirmed whether BGMI Lite will follow exactly the same model.

Industry expectations are that BGMI Lite could be optimised for budget smartphones and entry-level devices, potentially allowing players who face performance or hardware limitations with the standard BGMI to enter the franchise.

That could give Krafton a sizeable audience to chase. BGMI has already crossed 260 million downloads in India, according to the company, giving the publisher a substantial installed base from which to expand.

The strategy also comes as India’s mobile gaming market continues to grow, with Krafton positioning the lighter title as a way to bring more players into the wider BGMI ecosystem rather than diverting existing users from the flagship game.

For now, much of the battleground is still under wraps. Krafton has not said whether BGMI Lite will feature different maps, fewer players, reduced graphics, smaller download sizes or compatibility with existing BGMI accounts.

Questions also remain over whether progression systems will differ and whether the title will launch on Android and iOS, with the company yet to announce specific platform availability.

Krafton said further details on gameplay, supported devices and technical requirements will be revealed closer to launch. For now, the end-of-2026 window is the only firm marker leaving gamers to wait and see just how ‘Lite’ this new battle royale will actually be.
