MUMBAI: The festive season is bringing a cartload of jobs to Amazon India, with the e-commerce giant creating more than 1.6 lakh seasonal work opportunities across its operations network ahead of the year’s peak shopping period.

According to People Matters, the seasonal workforce expansion spans more than 400 cities, reaching beyond the metros into Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets including Varanasi, Kochi, Jalandhar, Ghaziabad, Ranchi, Salem and Gorakhpur.

The roles cover both direct and indirect positions, with seasonal associates stepping into the less glamorous but crucial machinery behind the shopping spree picking, packing, shipping and delivering orders as festive volumes rise. Amazon said most of the associates have already been onboarded, with training currently under way.

The latest hiring plan is 10,000 higher than last year’s 1.5 lakh seasonal opportunities, signalling the extra pressure expected across fulfilment centres, sorting facilities and last-mile networks. The workforce will support not only Amazon’s traditional e-commerce operations but also its growing Amazon Now quick-commerce network.

The hiring drive is also opening doors for thousands of women and persons with disabilities, as Amazon expands the workforce it relies on to keep orders moving during the festive rush.

That workforce plugs into a sizeable logistics backbone. Amazon operates fulfilment centres across 15 states, with more than 43 million cubic feet of storage capacity for seller inventory. Its network also includes sortation centres across 19 states, close to 2,000 Amazon-operated and partner delivery stations, around 28,000 Hub delivery partners and thousands of Amazon Flex partners.

The company has been steadily beefing up that last-mile muscle. In 2025, Amazon added 45 delivery stations ahead of the festive season, taking its network to around 2,000 stations.

Delivery personnel are also part of the expansion equation. Amazon’s Sammaan programme provides welfare measures for delivery associates, while Ashray offers air-conditioned rest facilities for drivers. Amazon plans to expand Ashray to 250 centres by the end of 2026.

At the other end of the delivery chain, the seller base has grown to more than 1.7 million sellers in India. That makes the seasonal workforce an important link between an increasingly crowded virtual storefront and customers waiting for their festive purchases to arrive.

With more sellers, more delivery infrastructure and now 1.6 lakh seasonal workers, Amazon is effectively adding extra hands to the country’s busiest shopping season just when the checkout button is likely to get its biggest workout.
