MUMBAI: Steam may have sprung a leak, and the data is anything but small. Around 12TB of data has reportedly been extracted from Valve’s Steam platform, allegedly covering content published between 2003 and 2013.

According to Valve-focused content creator Gabe Follower, the data was collected through a publicly accessible endpoint rather than through an actual hack. Valve moved to a different storage system in 2013, which reportedly explains why the trove stops at that point.

The sheer size of the data dump is only part of the story. It is said to cover the entire Steam library from the 10-year period, rather than being limited to Valve’s own games.

The reported 12TB archive is believed to contain complete games, beta builds and prototype versions that appeared on Steam during the period.

Game archivists and enthusiasts have already begun digging through the material, uncovering previously unseen versions of older titles.

One example reportedly involves Left 4 Dead, with a build dating back several months before the game’s release. The version features a different HUD, unused voice lines and sections of maps that were later changed before the retail release.

That discovery could make the archive particularly significant for game preservation. Beyond finished titles, it potentially offers a snapshot of how games looked and played while they were still being developed.

With 12TB of material to examine, the first discoveries could be only the beginning. As archivists and enthusiasts work through the data, more early builds, prototypes and other previously unseen material could emerge.

The reported collection also raises questions around how the data was accessible and what steps, if any, Valve may take in response.

Valve has not commented on the reported data extraction at this stage.
