MUMBAI: Jananayagan has added another crore to its cinematic scorecard. The H Vinoth directorial has become the first Tamil film released in 2026 to cross one crore viewers in India on streaming, according to data from Ormax Media, extending the film’s run from cinemas to Tamil Zee5.

The milestone comes after Jananayagan made its digital premiere on Tamil Zee5 on 21 August 2026, following its theatrical release on 24 July. The film’s streaming performance gives it another significant chapter after its theatrical run, with the latest viewership figure highlighting continued interest in the title.

Jananayagan occupies a particularly notable place in Vijay’s filmography as his final film as an actor. Vijay is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and his transition from cinema to politics has given the film an added significance for audiences familiar with his more than three-decade screen career.

The film was directed by H Vinoth and features Vijay in the lead, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Prakash Raj. It combines action, drama and social themes, with its story built around courage, leadership and social responsibility.

The theatrical-to-OTT journey has also been an important part of Jananayagan’s release story. The film eventually reached cinemas on 23 July according to multiple reports, after a prolonged certification process, before arriving on Zee5 on 21 August.

The film’s digital arrival has allowed viewers who missed its theatrical run to revisit Vijay’s final screen appearance from home. Its one-crore-plus India viewership on streaming now gives the title a measurable digital milestone beyond its box-office performance.

For Tamil Zee5, the acquisition has also become a significant streaming property. The platform had announced the 21 August premiere ahead of the film’s digital release, positioning the title as an important addition to its Tamil content slate.

Jananayagan’s appeal on streaming is closely tied to the larger cultural attention surrounding Vijay’s final film. His movies have historically generated strong fan engagement across Tamil Nadu and among Tamil-speaking audiences elsewhere, while the actor’s move into electoral politics has added another layer to the reception of his farewell film.

The film’s narrative itself leans into themes of public responsibility and leadership while retaining the commercial elements associated with Vijay’s cinema. Action sequences, emotional moments, music, dance and social messaging form part of the package directed by H Vinoth.

The one-crore milestone also shows how a film’s audience journey can continue after the cinema lights go out. For Jananayagan, the move to streaming has created another viewing window, turning a theatrical farewell into an ongoing digital watch.

Lloyd C. Xavier, business head – Tamil, Telugu & Malayalam, Zee5, said the platform acquired the film recognising its significance as Vijay’s final cinematic outing and its cultural and emotional value. He added that continued audience engagement with Jananayagan on Tamil Zee5 reaffirmed the significance of the title for viewers.

The latest milestone comes as the film continues to occupy a distinctive position in Tamil entertainment in 2026. With more than one crore viewers recorded in India by Ormax Media, Jananayagan has now become the first Tamil film of the year to cross that streaming threshold.
