India’s app economy stops counting downloads and starts counting money

Story TV rides the microdrama boom to a second straight top five finish as Sensor Tower’s Q2 2026 report reveals a $345 million quarter

CALIFORNIA: Numbers rarely tell a story this cleanly. India’s app economy has just posted its biggest revenue quarter on record, $345 million in in-app spending in Q2 2026, arriving hot on the heels of Q1’s own record of $300 million. Two consecutive quarters of accelerating growth is not a blip, it is a shift, and Sensor Tower’s latest report makes clear this is not being carried by one breakout hit. It is happening across categories simultaneously, which is precisely what makes it interesting.

The headline shift is structural rather than seasonal, India is moving from a download volume market to a spend value one. For years the country’s app story was about scale, more users, more installs, more downloads than anywhere else on earth. That story is now being rewritten around monetisation, users are not just showing up, they are paying.

Microdrama is where this plays out most vividly. The category’s cumulative downloads crossed 800 million, a genuinely staggering figure for a content format that barely registered a couple of years ago. Story TV has been the standout performer through this expansion, holding a top five position among India’s downloaded non gaming apps in both Q1 and Q2, and emerging as the only microdrama app to feature in the Q2 top 10. More tellingly, it recorded its highest ever monthly active user base in June, with estimated revenue growing more than 50 per cent quarter on quarter. Consistency across two quarters in a category this new is rare, and it suggests Story TV has cracked something closer to a durable habit loop rather than a passing novelty.

The AI story running alongside it is equally sharp. Claude’s revenue in India grew 19 times year on year, a number that confirms something the industry has suspected but not always seen proven at this scale, Indian users are moving past free trials and casual experimentation and are now paying for AI tools directly. That is a meaningful signal for how quickly willingness to pay for AI is maturing in the market.

Elsewhere, Rapido posted its highest ever monthly downloads, enough to make it India’s number one ride hailing app by monthly active users, a reminder that this spend led momentum is not confined to content and AI, it is showing up in everyday utility categories too.

Put together, the Q2 report reads like confirmation rather than surprise. India’s app market has spent years building scale, this is the quarter where that scale finally started converting into real, accelerating revenue, and it is happening broadly enough that no single app or category can claim the credit alone.
