Spotify gives magazine journalism a voice with new audio articles
Narrated stories from Vogue, Rolling Stone and WIRED join Spotify’s growing audio universe
MUMBAI: Spotify is turning magazine features into a listen-on-the-go experience with the launch of narrated long-form articles, expanding its ambitions beyond music, podcasts and audiobooks.
The platform has introduced a new feature called “Articles”, bringing more than 650 professionally narrated magazine stories to listeners in English-speaking audiobook-supported markets. The catalogue pulls together pieces from leading publications such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard and WIRED.
Designed as bite-sized long-form listening, each article runs for under two hours and sits alongside Spotify’s audiobook offerings. Premium subscribers can stream them within their monthly audiobook allowance, while free users have the option to purchase stories individually for $1.99.
The move reflects Spotify’s growing focus on spoken-word entertainment and its effort to make long-form content feel more accessible to audiences accustomed to short-form digital consumption.
“With Articles, we’re introducing long-form journalism in audio as a natural extension of the content users already come to Spotify for,” said licensing lead at Spotify Audiobooks Colleen Prendergast. She added that shorter listens could help build stronger listening habits and eventually encourage users to spend more time with audiobooks.
For publishing partners, the feature offers a new distribution channel that blends storytelling with Spotify’s recommendation engine and discovery tools.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Spotify in what we see as a natural synergy between two platforms that celebrate music and culture,” said Julian Holguin. He noted that the collaboration would help bring Rolling Stone’s journalism to a broader audience while improving discoverability for readers and listeners alike.
Spotify says its audiobook business has grown rapidly since launching just over two years ago, with the service now available across 22 markets. The company claims audiobook listening hours have risen 60 per cent year-on-year as it continues investing in features aimed at reshaping how audiences consume books and spoken-word content.
With narrated articles now joining playlists and podcasts, Spotify is making a clear play for every spare minute in a listener’s day, one story at a time.
