MUMBAI: Thirty-one years in, and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) is not looking back for long. The broadcaster has marked its 31st anniversary by announcing Chapter 31, a new chapter built on three promises: a new office, a new vision and new shows. “A new chapter begins, and we couldn’t be more excited!” the company said in its anniversary message.

The pitch is grounded in heritage. “For over three decades, Sony Pictures Networks India has been part of India’s entertainment journey, bringing people together through memorable stories, beloved shows and unforgettable sporting moments,” the company said. That is a fair summary of a business that has built its name on entertainment and sport in equal measure.

The pivot is aimed squarely at where audiences have gone. “Today, as audiences discover entertainment across new screens, platforms and languages, we’re evolving with them,” the company said. “With a renewed vision, new beginnings and exciting opportunities ahead, we’re looking forward to what we can create together.”

The anniversary creative, which carries the Sony Pictures logo and the line “Happy 31st Anniversary!”, spells out the three pillars of Chapter 31. The first is a new office, summed up as “a new home, a new beginning”. The second is a new vision, described as “content-first, platform agnostic, multi-lingual entertainment”. The third is new shows, promising “fresh ideas, unforgettable moments”. The creative closes with a thank-you to “every person who made this chapter extraordinary”, the line “Here’s to writing the next one together” and the sign-off “Tell stories beyond the ordinary”.

The company also had a word for its people and its viewers. “To everyone who has helped shape SPNI over the last 31 years, thank you for being part of our story,” it said. It signed off: “Here’s to Chapter 31 and the many possibilities it holds!”

The analysis is straightforward. Three phrases do the heavy lifting. “Content-first” says the story comes before the screen. “Platform agnostic” says the story should find viewers wherever they are, whether on television or streaming. “Multi-lingual” says India’s audience is not one audience, and that the broadcaster intends to speak in many tongues. Taken together, they describe a company that wants to behave less like a channel owner and more like a studio, which is where the economics of entertainment are heading. A new office is a tidy symbol of that reset, and fresh shows are the proof the market will judge. With 31 years behind it, SPNI has the library, the sport and the brand. Chapter 31 is its bid to make sure the next decade belongs to it as well.
