MUMBAI: Sony MAX is bringing one of the year’s most talked-about family entertainers to television screens, with the world television premiere of Sitaare Zameen Par scheduled for Sunday, May 31 at 1 PM.

Led by Aamir Khan, the sports drama arrives on television after a successful run in theatres and on digital platforms, where it connected strongly with audiences through its emotional storytelling and family-centric themes.

Directed by R. S. Prasanna, the film follows Gulshan Arora, a basketball coach whose life changes after a drunk-driving incident leads him into community service. As part of his sentence, he is tasked with coaching a team of neurodivergent players for a basketball tournament. What begins reluctantly slowly turns into a deeply personal and transformative journey.

Alongside Khan, Genelia Deshmukh plays Sunita, Gulshan’s wife. The film also features performances by Naman Misra, Rishabh Jain, Aroush Datta, Ashish Pendse, Simran Mangeshkar, Vedant Sharma, Samvit Desai, Rishi Shahani, Aayush Bhansali and Gopikrishnan K Varma, many of whom are real individuals rather than trained actors, adding a layer of authenticity and emotional honesty to the film.

The movie struck a chord with audiences for its portrayal of inclusivity, individuality and togetherness, wrapped in a tone that balances humour with emotion. Its recurring message around “sabka apna normal” sparked wider conversations around neurodiversity and acceptance while remaining accessible to family audiences.

Commenting on the television premiere, Aamir Khan said, “We wanted to tell a story that feels warm, joyful and full of heart, a film that families could sit together and enjoy.” He added that seeing viewers across generations laugh, smile and get emotional together had been especially rewarding, and said the film reaching homes through Sony MAX felt “really special”.

Meanwhile, Sitaare Zameen Par actor Genelia Deshmukh said the film celebrates what people can achieve rather than focusing on limitations. “What makes Sitaare Zameen Par so special is the joy and innocence with which it tells such an important story,” she said, adding that she was happy families across the country would now get to experience the film together on television.

The film has been produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, with B. Shrinivas Rao and Ravi Bhagchandka also serving as producers.

For Sony MAX, the premiere continues its long-standing strategy of turning Sunday movie viewing into a family affair. And for audiences, Sitaare Zameen Par may just be arriving at the perfect time, offering a reminder that sometimes the biggest wins are not on the scoreboard, but at home on the sofa together.
