R Praggnanandhaa beats Fabiano Caruana to win 2026 Grand Chess Tour

Missouri: Checkmate to history. Indian grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has pulled off a remarkable comeback against defending champion and American world No. 2 Fabiano Caruana to win the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals.

The 20-year-old’s victory makes him the first Indian player to win the Grand Chess Tour, adding another major milestone to a rapidly growing career.

Praggnanandhaa entered the final day with his back against the wall, trailing Caruana 3-9 after losing the opening classical game and drawing the second. What followed was a dramatic reversal of fortunes.

The Indian grandmaster came roaring back in the rapid section, winning both games in succession. The double victory completely changed the complexion of the match and handed Praggnanandhaa a two-point advantage.

Caruana then struck back in the second blitz game, bringing the scores level at 12-12. Praggnanandhaa responded immediately by winning the third blitz game, putting himself within touching distance of the title.

The fourth blitz game ended in a draw through threefold repetition, enough for Praggnanandhaa to secure a 15-13 overall victory and lift the GCT Finals crown.

The triumph also came with a substantial financial reward. Praggnanandhaa earned the $200,000 top prize from the Finals, taking his total earnings from the 2026 Grand Chess Tour circuit to more than $404,000.

The victory caps an exceptional year for the young Indian, who had earlier become the first Indian to win Norway Chess. He also defeated five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen twice during that tournament, further underlining his growing stature among the game’s elite.

Praggnanandhaa’s latest triumph now adds the Grand Chess Tour to that list. From a six-point deficit to a two-point winning margin, the Indian grandmaster turned what looked like a near-impossible comeback into a landmark chapter in Indian chess.
